James Hunter 1778

Back to List

James Hunter is my 3x great-grandfather, the third son of Nathan and Mary Hunter of Randalstown, County Antrim, Ireland. As this memorial marker in Goshen Hill, SC, USA indicates, he was born in Randalstown in 1778, and died in Goshen Hill, SC, USA, in 1846. In about 1799, he accompanied his family -- his parents and seven siblings -- to Frog Level (now Prosperity), SC, USA, with a group of Seceder Presbyterians. There, they joined another group which had emmigrated in 1774, and established the community and its new Prebyterian church.

In 1804, James moved north to Goshen Hill, in Union County, where he married Sarah Davis, who died not long after. James inherited Sarah's land, becoming an important local cotton grower and slave owner. In 1825, he married my 3x great-grandmother, Margaret Epps Burel (a descendsnt of one of Napolean Bonaparte's physicians). The couple had five children, including the eldest, James George Wahington Hunter, and my 3x great-grandfather, John C. Calhoun Hunter, b.1844 in Goshen Hill, SC, d.1912, Union, SC).

  • Hi,

My ggg grandfather John Hunter was born in Belfast, Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1806.  He came to NYC by 1835, where he married Mary Craig, born in England, and they moved to Troy (Lansingburgh), NY where John was a tailor.  We know that his parents were Robert and Ellen Hunter, and recently learned that his family had linen bleacheries in the Belfast area.  We've been unable to get back further than John, as far as records go.

Wonder if there is any connection between our Hunter families?

  • The short answer to your question is I don't know. My Hunter ancestors emmigrated from Ireland in about 1799, and I have no knowledge of any of the family that they left behind. In Ireland, they lived in Randalstown, County Antrim. Please let me know if you learn of any connection.

  • I am descended from three Hunter brothers that came from Randallstown and settled in orange county, New York in 1727. Archibald was the eldest, born between 1705 & 1708, James born abt. 1710 and Robert, born in 1714. It has also been suggested that a sister, Martha, accompanied them on their journey to America.

Interested to know if anyone has any family members born before Nathan Hunter, b. 1748 from the same place?

    Thanks!
