WHEATFORD / WHITEFORD

James Whiteford is on the NLI Catholic Parish Registers as baptised in Culfeightrin Parish on 7 May 1826. He was the son of Alic (Alexander) Whiteford and Margaret Cain. He was baptised/christened again in late May 1826 as recorded in the Old Parish Registers (OPR) of Campbeltown Scotland, presumably Church of Scotland. He is listed as Wheatford on the Culfeightrin records but was certainly Whiteford in Scotland and then Australia.

He is with his mother (Margaret) and sister (Cathrine) on the 1841 Census in Campbeltown. He emigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1852 but not before being christened again this time with his daughter Mary Reid Whiteford in 1851 prior to emigration. I hold the OPR records for these events. His death certificate in Australia in 1902 verifies Alexander and Margaret as his parents. There is another sister Margaret listed with Catherine and her husband Donald Galbaith on the 1871 Campbeltown Census. Margaret is listed as 40 and Catherine as 50 at that Census.

I have spoken to other Whiteford researchers and he may be related to the other James Whiteford listed for Culfeightrin under Ireland XO but nothing solid has come out to prove this.

In looking through the NLI registers for Culfeightrin there are a few other Wheatfords and Cains and I will need to do a really thorough search to see if I can find any that could possibly be related.  However, the records for the Parish only start in 1825 so finding his older sisters is not going to happen from those records.

I would love to hear back from anybody who knows of these families or with possible suggestions for other records from the earlier part of the 1800s.
