He was employed by several railroad companies during his working life, starting at about 14 years old. From about 1888 onwards, he was a Section Foreman, leading of a gang of men called "gandy dancers", who would repair and maintain the track. Initially, this job meant he would have to travel long distances across many States, which can be seen in the various places of birth for his children. From 1893 onwards, he was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad, and permanently settled in Chicago.
