  • My Flannery's were born just about the same time (late 1830s-mid 1840s) and immigrated to Chicago in the 1860's. I have located records for them that list Ryan's and Gleeson's as witnesses and have been trying to establish a connection between the families.

  • Hi Erin,

I just saw this so apologize for any delay.  That is very interesting, we should discuss this further and see if it unlocks any doors for either of us.  I actually hit a brick wall at Laurence's parents since there were numerous John Ryans (his father) and Mary Gleeson's (his mother) that were married during the same time period.

Check Laurence  on Find-a-Grave to see a few more details. On FAG, it's spelled Lawrence, although it was originally Laurence.

When you get to his page, scroll down to the bottom and click on my name Jamee Ryan Carlin. It will take you to my profile page which will give you my email address.

BTW, I live just north of Rodger's Park.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    Jamee

  • I was able to track my grandfather and great-grandfather to the town of Killoscully which is in the same parish, with the help of Ireland XO.     As it turns out, the churchyard in Killoscully is full of Ryans and Gleesons.   My great grandfather Michael Gleeson was married to a Mary Ryan.   You might want to look around Killoscully.   The one and only pub in town is called Ryan’s.

  • The Killoskully headstones on line at Tipperary studies digitisation project.

I am very in the Laurence Ryan as my GGGF was Laurence Ryan from Shanaclune Cappamore.

All I have is his name on the Tithes and Griffiths..

  • Hi Patricia,  Thank you, I do have a record of his parent's marriage. That much at least I have.  I just can't get further back. I've recently found some more info to explore but it will be a while before I can actually get to it.

  • Gleason,  That is very close (location) and a goood possiblity to explore. Thank you.  I am also looking at a possible Timothy Gleeson b. ca. 1820 (Shalee) and Catherine Ryan match and one other Gleeson-Ryan match.  Thanks also for mentioning the churcyard. I am going to check the digitized records.

  • Good luck.  I was able, with the help of the XO community to find the headstone my GF erected in memory of his parents after he left Ireland and settled in Buffalo, NY.    He was from Coulreagh and his mom was from lower Shallee.

  • Hi Bryan,

When did your Ryans emigrate? Do you know what year they married and was it in Tipperary?

My Ryans also have a John Ryan and Mary Gleeson (my great-great-great grandparents).  As follows:

John Ryan and Mary Gleeson married 7 Feb 1836, Newport (date of births/deaths to be verified)

Their Children, all baptised in Ballinahinch/Newport (Ballinahinch Catholic Church):

    Patrick Ryan (1837-1838/1839)

    Timothy Ryan (1838-1917)

    Patrick Ryan (1839-deceased)

Laurence Ryan (1843-1944): My great-great grandfather

    Margaret Ryan (1844-deceased)

Owen Ryan (1845-d1934, date of death to be verified)

There may have been a still born between 1940-1942, not sure.

Timothy, Laurence and Owen all emigrated to the United States and ended up in Chicago, IL. The 1880 Census shows Timothy and Owen with a brother, Tommy.  This was about a year after Laurence Ryan married Mary Byrnes (m. 1870) in Chicago.

I am not sure who Tommy is unless he hasn't been indexed yet or something happened to his record.  He might have been born in that gap between 1940-1942 shown above (Between Patrick and Laurence). Or he might haveeven been a half brother or a cousin that thay just told the census taker was a brother.  All kins of possibilities!

Owen is the only record that states an address in addition to a parish and that is Ballykinlalee/Ballykinlelee refered to as Ballykinalee now-a-days.

  • I put in post already, as my GGGF  was Laurence/Lawrence Ryan Vora from Shanaclune Cappamore.

He owned land there in the Tithes with brother Patrick.

I do not know his wife's name because records for Cappamore did not start until 1844.

Do you have DNA done and are you on GEDmatch.

  • Thanks for the feedback...

I am not sure when John Ryan and Mary Gleeson arrived in Canada as I am still researching

William Ryan shown in our tree is my GG grandfather and he married Mary "Minnie" Devine

    Here is obit for William:

Death announcement - A son of the late John Ryan and his wife, formerly Mary Gleeson, he was born near Almonte. Forty‑five years ago he married Miss Mary Devine, who survives with five sons, Rev. A. P. Ryan of Broadview, Sask.; John, Andrew, William, Raymond of Pakenham Township, and four daughters, Mrs. James Lunney of Pakenham; Rev. Sister Mary William of Lestock, Sask.; Rev. Sister St. Clare, Superior of St. Mary’s School, Ottawa; and Rev. Sister St. Rita of the Immaculate College, Ottawa. Surviving, also, are one brother, Michael Ryan of Almonte, and three sisters, Miss Julia Ryan of Ottawa; Mrs. M. Hodgins of Toronto and Mrs. John O’Neil of Kinburn. Rev. John O’Neil and Rev. Alphonsus O’Neil, both of Ottawa, and L. J. Hodgins of Toronto, are among the surviving nephews, while nieces include Rev. Sisters Leonard and Delphine, both of Toronto, and Rev. Sister Julitta of Almonte.

DNA test is my next step!
