Lawrence Ryan 1821

Back to List

The first known record of Lawrence Ryan is the 1860 U.S. census.  By that time he has  emigrated the North America from Cappamore parish.  He has married Mary Madden of Doon Parish.  And together they have a 5-year-old child named Annie that was born in Portage Michigan U.S.

In 1860 Lawrence was a miner working in the copper mines of Marquette County on Lake Superior.

The family moved to Negaunee Michigan by 1870 where Lawrence was working as a shopkeeper.

Lawrence and Mary had 9 children.  Sadly all but 1 died of tuberculosis by 1895. Their only son Patrick Ryan (b 1866) moved to Detroit sometime before 1890 and became a bookkeeper.  Patrick married in 1900 and 3 sons.  I am descended from his 3rd son Robert Francis (the only to have issue).

Lawrence died 20 Jan 1871. Negaunee Michigan of Tuberculosis.  He was interred at Negaunee Cemetery.  His monument was purchased by his son Patrick and it reads  “Sacred to the memory of Larance Ryan died Jan 20, 1871 A native of Parish Cappamore County Limerick Ireland erected by his wife Mary Ryan”

Lawrence is referenced in the following online resources:

  • 1860 U.S. Census

  • 1870 U.S. Census

  • My Laurence Ryan, 2x grt grandfather came to the US in 1844. He arrived in New york, traveled up the Hudson River to Albany and then on the Erie Canal to Syracuse, where he was a mason and then a building contractor. His parents were William and Catherine Burke Ryan. My brick wall. Out of Cappawaite, or Nenagh, I believe. Beth

  • Beth, The parish you mentioned ( Cappawaite ) should read Cappawhite. Its about 8 miles from Cappamore where I live. As you are probably aware there are far more Ryan surnames in this general area than any other surname. I have several Ryan ancestors from both my parents families, and my wife is also a ryan from the Thurles area of County Tipperary. I am coonected with the Maddens of Doon also, some 3 or 4 generations back.

My son Conor and i are listed on the Ancestry DNA site, and I uploaded his DNA to the Gedmatch site a few years back.

    Regards
