Margaret Burke McCann, my great-grandmother, died of TB in the Carrick workhouse in 1909, leaving 2 young daughters. It has been difficult to trace Margaret Burke's family. Are they Burke-Pendergasts from Kilkenny? Her marriage certificate does not give parents' names. I know she was born about 1881.

It has also not been easy to trace her husband's family; he was James McCann, born in Carrick in 1876. I am thinking his parents were Patrick McCann and Johanna Hogan, but can't be sure. he appeared to have had many siblings, but their trails go cold. And few DNA shares are showing up for that side of the family on Ancestry.

Any ideas on how I can pin down the Burke and McCann forbears past the 1st ggrands?

Thanks,
Tricia

  • Hello Tricia,

I've had a look on the Irish Genealogy website and found the civil marriage record for Margaret Burke and James McCann in July 1903. Margaret was a servant living in Ballylinch at the time of her marriage. It lists her father as Richard Burke, a labourer. Her husband, James McCann was a baker living in Carrickbeg. His father was Patrick McCann, a cooper.

Hopefully that information will be helpful in your search.
