Mary was born in 1792 in Cork, the daughter of Tino Sullivan and Maryann (or Margaret) Murphy. In 1814 she marries William or Michael Kelleher and has a daughter Catherine (1815).
Mary is sentenced in the County Court, Cork, to 7 years transportation for house stealing, and arrives in Australia on August 5th, 1817 on the Canada 4, with her daughter. Mary is sent to the female factory in Parramatta
In1820 she marries Samuel Higgins, convict who arrived on the Fame (1816), their son John is born in 1823.
In 1824 Mary is charge with stealing pork and appears in Parramatta court, dismissed for lack of evidence.
In 1826 she marries Vardy/Fardy Sheehan/Shean, (Guildford 1816) bigamously as she is still married to Samuel, records also show her marrying Fardy/Vardy in 1834. Lives in Cornwallis. They have 4 children Thomas (1826), Bridget (1828), William (1831-31), and Michael (1832).
Mary died on April 8th, 1839 in Windsor and is buried in St. Matthew's Catholic graveyard in Windsor.

Mary is my 3 times great grandmother, I am not sure what parish in Cork she came from.

  • Hi, my research has Catherine being admitted to the Female Orphan School in Parramatta, under the name Catherine Higgins, her mother  had married convict Samuel Higgins.  She was the apprenticed to a Matthew Pearce in Seven Hills. After her mother married Vardy Shean (sometimes spelt Sheahen) she was known as Catherine Shean.  In 1832 she married a convict Phillip Smith and a daughter Susan was born (1832-1877), not sure what happened to this marriage, anecdotally she then marry a James Murphy, another convict (my great great grandfather) there is no record of this marriage,  a few who have done they family tree have different James Murphy’s, either a 14 year old who arrived on the convict ship Andromeda in 1830, or another James Murphy aged 35 who arrived on the Lonarch in 1825.  James and Catherine has the following children

Catherine (1835-36), Catherine (1836-1906), Philip (1837-1877), Bridget (1843-1920), Margaret (1843-43) Anastasia (1847-1939) Michael (1851-1911) and James (1853-1859). There is no record of her husband James dying but she marries John Walter in 1853 they have Elizabeth (1855-1910)  and John (1858-59)  Catherine died in 1877 in Omeo Victoria on July28th 1877.

I hope this has been of assistance to you, regards

  • Thanks for all the work you put into explaining about Catherine Kelleher. This is not my ancestor, my Catherine came to New York USA IN early 1850's and married Thomas John Johnston. All their children were born in Ontario Canada.
So hoping I had finally found a clue to my tree. Thanks again
