Migrated to/Born in USA

Mrs. Mary Santry was born in Killarney, County Kildare, ca. 1811. She emigrated to the United States with her husband, Timothy Santry about 1844 and settled in New Diggings, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, USA.

Mr. Santry was born at Whitehall, County, Cork about 1816. He engaged in mining in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. They had more than eight children but only five who survived to adulthood; Daniel, Hannah, Mary, Timothy, and Abby.

Mr. Timothy Santry, Sr. died in 1865 and was buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Benton, Lafayette County, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Santry ran a grocery store for a time after the death of her husband. She was widely known in her community as "Mother Santry" because of her taking orphan children into her home [especially during the cholera epidemic] until foster or adoptive parents could be found for them.

Mrs. Santry died on 29 December 1894 according to her obituary,  although her death date is given as January 1895 according to her tombstone in St. Patrick's Cemetery, in Benton, Lafayette Co, Wisconsin, USA.  [See her find A Grave Memorial listing]
