Mary was the daughter of John Walsh, a Horsetrainer. She married James Leech on 9 October 1870 at Taghmon Parish Church, Wexford. She had six children, three born in Co Wexford - Ellen, Mary and Johanna - and three born in England - Catherine (aka Kate), Margaret (aka Maggie) and John. They relocated to Liverpool, England sometime before 1876, later moving to Custom House, London.
