Do you know if your ancestor John was catholic or Protestant? Do you have any idea what county he was from? Most of the McGarrell families in early irish records were scotchirish presbyterians largely living in or near Antrim. My family was Roman Catholic and Michael stated that he was born in County Longford. Early tithe applotment records and church records show a few McGarrell families in Longford near the town of Kenagh. Michael's father was Daniel and there was a daniel McGarrell growing flax in Longford in 1796. Interestingly Michael named his first boy John and his Second Thomas and then followed the Irish tradition Daniel (his father), James (his wife's father), then Michael (my grandfather) I've wondered if John might have been the name of Michael's brother as Thomas was the name of his wife's brother who stayed in Ireland until about 1860. Michael changed his name from McGarrell to McGurl sometime between 1843 and 1861 while living in Schuylkill county PA. I have a relatively complete tree on ancestry. Any additional information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Have you done a DNA test? I have and it's available to compare on most of the web sites. Of course even if John and Michael were brothers we'd be third cousins  once, twice, or thrice removed in the best case and even 3rd cousins have a 10% chance of sharing no DNA.

    thanks

  • hi gill

my  ancestor was down in the 1841 census as church of england he was married in 1832 so must have come over just befor that

we have no info on him at all except he changed his name to john mcgirl shortly after arriving in the uk, inorder to het work.  he died in 1848 during the cholora epidemic in newcastle upon tyne. hi childrens names were, miles, john william daniell michael ann mary, his 1st child miles (my ancestor) was born in 1838 which makes me think there were others before him, and big gaps inbetween other children.

all but miles and john william also died around the same time and john. the surviving sons change the surname to mcgarrell, but later john william's decentants changed it to mcgurl. each birth registation has different spelling, mcgurl, mgurtz, mcgall..

i have been trying to trace him for aqbout 10 years in order to find out his origininal surname.

my DNA matches havnt come up with any matches in ireland, the closest is a 3rd coursin in the usa who spells it mcgarril, her ancestor was born in the 1850's his name also john. my  john mayhave changed his religion as well as his name in order to get work.

all the men in our family have the names john henry, daniell michael thomas william thomas. it would be wonderful to find out we were related. my dna is on ancestry my heritage and MYFTDNA

hopeing to find out more from you
