Michael was born 1840 in Foynes, Limerick to Michael Sheahan and Catherine McMahon.  He was christened 29 Sep 1840 in Shanagolden, Limerick.  He had numerous brothers and sisters.  Bridget (1829), Daniel (1830), Patrick (1832), Mary (1833), Margaret (1836), Philip (1837), Alice (1839), Jeremiah (1842), Catherine (1845), Sarah (1846), Peter (1846) and Maurice (1848).

He emmigrated to Victoria in 1861 and after spending a few years in New Zealand and Ballarat, where he was associated with the Ballarat Stock Exchange for some time, he settled in Carlton and for the next 45 years would conduct a grocer and spirit merchant business in Lygon Street and became a Justice of the Peace.

He was always prominent in Catholic circles in Melbourne and was elected Grand President of the  Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society in 1895.

On 2 September 1885 he married Bridget Mary Brody in St.George's Church, Carlton, and for the rest of his life he would take a keen interest in the parish.  They had the following children.  Michael (1886), Catherine (1889), William (1891), Francis (1892), John (1894), Michael Bryan (1896) and William Patrick (1901). 

Michael died 19 May 1921 at the age of 81 and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton.
