Michael was born about 1863 in Ireland, possibly in or around Tourmakeady, Mayo. He had an older brother, James (b. 1855) and sister, Bridget (b. 1862). His father was Henry and his mother was Bridget Philben (Philliban). He emigrated to Stirling, Scotland with his mother, brother and sister, in time for the 1881 census. He married Bridget Price in 1883 in Denny, Stirling. They had 8 children: Mary, 1888, Bridget, 1891, Winifred, 1893, Annie, 1895, Helen, 1899, John, 1902, Mary Agnes, 1904, and Michael, 1906. Michael was a coal miner and during WWI he was enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders, serving in India and dying in 1918 in Rawalpindi.
