James Delehunty was from Waterford and educated at St. John's College in the city.

He was involved in local politics for many years before winning a seat in the 1868 general election, representing Waterford City. He lost his seat but later in 1877 was returned as the MP for Co. Waterford, this time as a Home Rule Candidate.

One of his claims to fame it was said, was the dullness of his speeches. Often times he was laughed because of this but was generally seen as 'warm hearted' if not a little disorganised.
