Patrick A. DORAN, was born 1  November 1833 in County, Mayo, Ireland. He moved to the USA with his parents when he was a young boy and the family settled for a time in Wheeling, West Virginia, USA.

When he was about 18 years old he moved to Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas Territory where he worked as a steward at the Planter's Hotel [see illustration]. That was during the "Bleeding Kansas" era [1854-1861] preceding the Civil War.  Mr. Doran remained in that position about eleven years.

He later went into business for himself.

Years later Mr. Doran took "great pleasure" in relating anecdotes--"Some humorous and some pathetic" about the many incidents he witnessed and the many guests, both pro-slavery and free-staters, whom he met while working at the Planter's Hotel.

About 1859 Patrick A. Doran married  Bridget FOX who was born on 1 June 1841 in County Leitrim, Ireland. She had emigrated to the USA  [probably with relatives] when she was a young girl and settled in New York for a time. In 1858 Bridget moved to Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas Territory. Bridget was employed as a governess by General Schofield's family at Fort Leavenworth.

Patrick and Bridget Doran were the parents of at least five children: Robert, Mary, John, Thomas, and Louise (Mrs. A. C. Schwartz).

Bridget (Fox) DORAN died on 23 August 1896 at the age of 55 in Leavenworth, Kansas, and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Leavenworth.

Patrick A. Doran died in Leavenworth, Kansas of Bright's disease on 22 September 1898 at the age of 64. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Leavenworth.

According to his obituary, Mr. Doran was "always genial and full of wit and made friends of all whom he met. He was one of the most prominent Irish-American Citizens of this city and was a member of several of the Catholic organizations here."
