I am Paul Lowry, son of Anna Kearney and grandson of Peter F Kearney/Carney.  All my information about Peter comes from IrelandXO matching of Peter's sibling names to the children of James & Mary McEntire  Carney family's baptismal records found by IrelandXO.  Researcher McDonnell reported to me:

I believe I located the correct baptismal record for Peter Carney in 1858 In Islandeady RC church northeast of Westport. No maiden names is shown for Mary but other baptismal records show McEntire. I located records for the following siblings to Peter. Bridget 1846 Mary 1851 Judith 1854 James 1856 Thomas 1862 Anne 1866. Civil registration of births began in 1864 so I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and found the record for Anne.

Interestingly, family notes I found say that Peter came to the U.S. with a cousin named Jennings.  Peter's baptismal certificate show the "informants" were both named Jennings.

Peter F. Carney/Kearney emigrated to Scranton, PA as did sisters Julia Carney/Kearney Conway and Mary Carney/Kearney Calvey.  All changed the spelling of Carney to Kearney.  Obituaries of all three mention a sibling Thomas Carney still in Ireland.

Peter and his sisters lived within a mile of one another in North Scranton, Pa.  Peter married Nora Moran and most of their children, including my family remained in that area of Scranton.  The photo of Peter was taken at his home on Oak Street.

While having success in DNA matching cousins in the USA, I have not yet connected with any family of siblings that remained in Ireland.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1870 (circa)
Date of Death 1st Apr 1927 (circa)
Names of Siblings Julia Carney/Kearney Conway and Mary Carney/Kearney Calvey in Scranton, PA. Obituaries mention a brother Thomas Carney in Ireland.

  • Good day Peter;

I am a descendant of Michael Cusack and Margaret Carney/Kearny through their son Michael (m Elizabeth Hughes).  Perhaps we have a connection?

I have Carney/Kearney from Islandeady and Castlebar, Co Mayo.

    Michael Cusack 1786-1870 m Margaret Carney/Kearney 1798-1869

    Children:

Patrick (b circa 1830 - varies by censuses, but same person, died 1900 Glasgow)  Married Frances Lavery.  (Children:  probably Patrick, John, Bridget all died as infants)

James (b circa 1835-   varies by censuses, but same person, died 1891, Yorkshire)  Married Jane Lynett (Children:  Jane, John, Thomas, William, Margaret Ann, Robert, Michael, James, Mary)

Michael (b 1839, d 1897 in Glasgow)  Married Elizabeth Hughes (Children:  Ann, Elizabeth, Frances, James, Margaret, Michael, Mary)

Catherine (b 1842, d 1897, Castlebar)  Married Patrick O'Malley  (Children:  include Mary, Patrick, William, Kate/Catherine, James, Thomas, Margaret, Owen)

    John (b 1843, death unknown)

Anne (b 1845, possible death 1914, Buffalo, NY)  m Patrick Burke (Children: include Patick, Peter, Maria, Michael, Anthony Francis, Anne, Joseph or Josie.)

Mary (b 1847, d 1896, West Seneca, NY) Married John Burke, widowed, married a 2nd John Burke.  (Children: include Anne, Catherine, Michael, Julia, Mary and a son who I have yet to identify)

I am having trouble tracing my Carney/Kearneys although I have had DNA matches to some that moved to Perthshire, Scotland.

I have DNA matches with descendants of some of the above, and also have a DNA match with a descendant of Thomas Carney, b  Mayo, d 1850 Mayo.  Wife Honor/Ann Joyce.  Son John Carney, b 1835 d 1920, Mayo m Mary Duffy 1845-1915 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Daughter Helen b 1826, son Thomas married Bridget Gibbons in Perth, Perthshire; son William b 1842, also moved to Perth.  Honor Joyce's parents:  Tom and Margret Joyce.

Witnesses for bapt of Michael Cusack and Margaret Kearney/Carney’s daughter Catherine, in 1842, were Michael Kearney and Bridget Kearney.  Witnesses to Catherine’s daughter Mary’s baptism in 1863 were Michael Cusack andMargaret Kearney.  Witness at marriage of Michael and Margaret’s Anne to Patrick Burke, was Mary Carney.

I would be interested in knowing if any of my information looks familiar to you.

    All the best,

    Eileen

  • Hello Eileen,

Paul Lowry here... grandson of Peter F. Carney Kearney of Letter townland, Isleandeady parish, County Mayo.  May I first congratulate you on your extensive gathering of family data. I am envious of your success and can feel the work that must have gone into its collection.  Well done.

My great-grandparents James and Mary McEntire Carney were of Letter townland, Islandeady parish, county Mayo and don't seem to have a name/date match with your James Carney.  Their children were born between 1857-66.  The James and Jane Carney you mention (1835-1891) died in Yorkshire with different children's names.

I haven't any information about Carney's before James where there might have been a connection.  Good luck with your continuing research.

    Paul

    Hi Peter, Eileen and Paul,

My name is Linda (Smith) Phillips. I'm not related to any Carneys, except by marriage, but my grandmother, Mary Kilcoyne, was born in Islandeady Station, Co. Mayo. Having visited there several times, I know how small and rural the area is and thought I'd reach out to others with ancestors from Islandeady.

My grandmother's mother's name was Irwin-- the same family that owned the Irwin ladies' and men's shop in Castlebar years later. I know there's a Kilcoyne butcher in Castlebar also, but we're not related to those Kilcoynes. We're related to Frs. Sean and Colm Kilcoyne.

I just sent my Foreign Birth Registration and other documents in to get my Irish passport. Very nice to connect with others from Islandeady.

    Linda

  • Hello All
I also have Carney in my family History.
My 2 x Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Carney B 1845 in Ireland.
She Married Thomas Patrick Birmingham - Also born Ireland -  on 27 August 1875 at the age of 21 in Oldham UK (She was also known as Betsey, He was known as Parick and Thomas depending on which document you look at)
I have found both on the 1871 UK census at 7 Ironmonger Street, but by 1881 Patrick is Widow, however, I can, not find a record of Elizabeths death.  They had several Children on the 1881 Census, John (1866 - who I believe emigrated to USA), Peter (1871- My G Grandfather), Margaret (1874 who emigrated to Ellis Island USA), Mary (1877), Kate (2) who emigrated to USA named Dyer, William (1880) who also appears to have died in (1880)

Elizabeth's Father is named on her marriage certificate as WIlliam Carney.  I am yet to find either of the Carney's or Thomas Patricks family in Ireland but I believe Patrick Thomas was from Offally
