Robert Gamble 1795

Back to List

Robert Gamble with his wife Mary Hargan, 9 children, and Mary's brother Robert, arrived in Melbourne on the Lady Peel in 1848. Another child was born in Melbourne.  Robert Gamble died in Melbourne in 1868.

Mary Hargan's sister Matilda Hargan married David Faulkner and they emigrated to New South Wales in 1842. Matilda and David's son Robert married Robert and Mary's daughter Sarah.

The Autralian immigration records show that they came from Cumber Upper parish in Derry. I found a record from the 1831 census showing a Gamble family and Faulkner family living in the townland of Craig which match what I know about these families.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1795 (circa)

  • Mary and Matilda HARGAN had another sister, Letitia HARGAN/HARGIN who married Robert William STEWART in Hobart, Tasmania on 2 October 1849

I would dearly love to find her birth details.  Her birth has been listed invariably between 1820 and 1830 in Londonderry.  Are you able to help locate her

birth details?  Many thanks, Glenys Bolland, from Australia

  • Sorry I don't have much information for Letitia Hargan. Irish birth records are difficult to find.
Letitia Hargan arrived in Australia in January 1842 and her age is given as 21,
     so probably born in 1820.
She died in 1891 and her age at death is given as 64 which would give a birth year
     1826 or 1827.
Her marriage record only gives age as over 21

Good morning and greetings from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, kaspern2.

Thank you for your helpful and very prompt reply to my question about Letitia HARGAN/HARGIN.

    It is so helpful.

I wonder if you would also have the details of her point of departure in 1842 from Ireland,

her entry point to Australia, and the name of the ship she arrived in?

  • I tried to upload an image of the immigration record for Letitia but it was removed for security reasons. You can do a search

on this site https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1542665 . Put in the name "David Falconer"

  • The Margaret departed from Greenock in Scotland. I don't know how the Irish passengers got to Greenock.

You can read the passenger list for the Margaret here https://search.records.nsw.gov.au/primo-explore/fulldisplay?context=L&v…

Letitia is on the 7th image
