Robert Samuel Browne 1829

Back to List

I am a Grt Grt Grandaughter of Robert Samuel Browne c1829 Stone Mason, and Letitia McCormick Glasgow C1831 Cookstown.

Robert Samuels Parents on his death certificate were William Browne and Jane Love, which  has proved to be correct.

Letitias parents are said to be Samuel Glasgow, Gentleman, and Ann McCormick from her death certificate. We are confident that this is correct.

29 March 1855 Robert and Letitia married in the Derry Loran Church of England. Fathers were given as William Browne and Samuel Glasgow. Witnesses were John Ballantine and Letitias brother Thomas McNiece Glasgow. There address was given as Knockatanty, Lower Bodoney, Gortin, Derryloran. I believe Knockatanty is in fact Crockatanty, and this will show further on.

5 May 1855 Robert and Letitia set sail from Liverpool on the Olliver Lang ,arriving in Melbourne Australia 31 July 1855.

Now I have done an Ancestry DNA test, and from this we have found a sister for Robert,  Mary Anne Browne 1832 to 1904. 24 February 1852 Mary Anne 20 Spinster Crockatanty married John Scott farmer Garvaghey Parish of Cappagh. Fathers given as Arthur Scott and Williame Browne. Some time after John and Mary Anne emigrated to Pensylvania  USA.

Recently we made another Extremely High DNA discovery, this time with a lady in Canada (Bonnie). Bonny's Grt Grt Grandfather is William Browne 1827 Crockatanty, full age farmer. His father is William Browne. 1st of September 1855 William married Margaret Ballantine age 17 Crockatanty. Her father Joseph Ballantine, farmer. Witnesses  were John Farquhar and John Ballantine. Margaret was said to have died at Crockatanty. Bonnie claims her William died in 1895 at Greenan County Westmeath, but I have doubts about this, as I found a site Griffith valuations of Ireland 1876 lower Bodoney  Failte Romhat saying William Browne was a farmer in Greenan Lower Bodoney. Anyway on Bodoney Lower Parish Churches, St Patricks church of Ireland. Gortin Marriages 1845 to70. I have found the marriages of what looks to be 3 sisters of Margaret Ballantine, all 4 girls are on the site:

  • 16 sept 1851 Jane Ballantine married James Mcfarland.

  • 24 June 1862 Mary Ann Ballantine married John Hawks.

  • 30 December 1869Eliza Ballantine married Robert McCrea.

All these girls were from Crockatanty, and in all cases the father was Joseph.    Some of the witnesses were probable brothers of the girls.

Back to Margaret and William, their daughter Mary Ann Brown 1857 -1950 married James Mayne and they emigrated to Canada shortly before WW1.   Mary Ann was said to have at least one brother David.

Now back to Robert Samuel Browne the subject of this Chronicle, and my main interest. We have found signs of him having at least another sister Jane, and a brother John, also maybe a Joseph. But no proof.  We have found nothing of his mother Jane Love.

His wife Letitia, we see McCormicks in the area, also a Samuel Glasgow in Gortin. But nothing proved.

Hope all of this is of interest to you guys. I'm always interested in finding more news.
