My GGGGrandmother, born around 1820 (guessing). A mystery to me... married John McConnell in either Belfast or County Down.  She is my roadblock! Mother to my GGgrandmother, Sarah McConnell Quigley.   It has been suggested that she may have been a stpmother to  Sarah, as there are records of John, a widower marring a Martha Foreman at around the correct time in County Down.  John McConnell, Martha's husband was a miller, as listed on Sarah's marriage record.  I can find record of no other Martha and John. Interestingly, on the 1901 census John Quigley filled out that Sara'hs birthplace was Belfast, but when she filled it out on her own in 1911 after he passed, she listed it as Dromore. Martha is a mystery to me!  But I am thankful for this labelled photo!

  • Do you know what Martha's maiden name was? If you have any definate information on dates, relationships and places it helps. I was stumped with my own great grandmother also named Martha (nee Tennyson) who ultimately married a McConnell originally from Ballynadrentagh, he also had/has family in county Down. I recieved a copy of a Confirmation Certificate from a cousin from my Martha's bible which helped me trace her origins. All we had known was that she was from county Tyrone. I presume your Martha has immigrated at some stage, do you know when?

  • Hello,

Yes - we have discovered that her maiden name was Sarah Dougan AKA Dregan in a translation.

I don't know if you have done DNA testing and have a Gedmatch, but I found my McConnell line through the Antrim / County Down Matchmaker DNA Group.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/727683260920707

We have a lot of the McConnell line figured out through family DNA connection here - maybe it will help!  There is also a Tryone group as well if you would like to try there.

    Best wishes!
