Info from headstone in Ludden Cem.  Name is spelled COARBITT - not unusual spelling for Corbett. Inscription on headstone (not my work):  "Here Lyes the body/of Thimity Coarbitt/and his wife he depad/this life Agut ye 27th, 1800//agd 72 yrs erectd/by his sons John & Thimity Coarbitt/May Ye Rest in Peace/Amen". (Poor wife didn't rate a mention by name).

My ancestor John Corbett (bc1796 listed as "From Cosgriff" in PR for rmarriage),  may be a descendant of this "Thimity".  Always thought John was frm Cosgriff nr Shanagolden but never found any Corbetts there.  Have just leaned there is a Cosgriff nr Ludden and a Corbett fam.   Anyone got a clue?  Cheers, from Oz.

  • Hi there, you might like to read up on this link for your family name comments. it might help to clarify some of the knowledge that you already have. https://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Cosgriff

    Last name: Cosgriff

Another sept of the same name, often Anglicized as Cosker, is found in south-east Leinster particularly around north Wicklow, near Bray. The name is also found as Cosgrove in Ulster and Connacht. The original Gaelic version of the surname first appeared in records in the late 10th Century.

You mentioned a Corbett Farm, actually there is around a dozen so named and a large machinery company in Cork, so that is a bit challenging and we need to investigate other areas.like for example https://www.johngrenham.com/findasurname.php?surname=Corbett; this is an invaluable paper for your family name and might well lead you to more information - there was and is certainly falilies with the surname Corbet/Corbett in Shannagolden

Have a look at the pages shown above and then let us know how you have fared

  • Thanx for note of 29 Aug.  I am though a bit confused by your comments. Cosgriff is not a name in my line, it is a possible location for my Corbett family.  There is a place called Cosgriff aka Corgriff aka Corgrigg near Shanagolden, where my ancestor John Corbett was farming c1827 and there is also a Cosgriff near Ludden.  I have only recently learned there were Corbetts in Ludden but have no idea if they are mine or not. It's a new avenue for me to explore.

And I know of no farm named Corbetts Farm. I only know that John Corbett farmed in Ireland. His convict records list him as a spadesman and reaper.

I looked at John Grenham's site quite some time ago now; no joy there. Yes there were many Corbetts in and around Shanagolden, especially Rathkeale and Newcastle West.  I've had no luck with any definite connections there though. As such, I was trying to expand my search and so found the Ludden Corbetts.

My thougths were that perhaps John might have been one of the journeyman labourers who travelled about the country, hiring themselves out at sowing and harvesting times and then returning home when the work was finished.  If his home was Ludden, then Shanagolden could have been within a reasonable distance for a work place for him if he was a journeyman.  And he may have met his future bride there (she was Johanna Welsh from Shanagolden) & so moved there after they married.

I have found no trace of John Corbett prior to his marriage entry in the Shanagolden PRs. I do have many records of his life though atfer he was convicted and sent to Oz.  My main reasons for joining this group is to see if anyone out there has any clues as to:  1) John's origin & life in Shanagolden  2) his older brother Patrick's life prior to HIS transportation in 1822   and  3) John's wife Johanna Welsh's life in Shanagolden

    Thanx all!
