  • Interesting. What year and grandparents have you traced to Kilcoo Co. Down? I have Williams parents as being FrancisMulholland andCatharine Jennings.Marriage Reg.lists their fathers being James Mulholland and Christie Jennings. Married in Belfast and all children also born in Belfast. I havent had time to look further.

Also, William married Lizzie Kearney in Belfast Ot 3, 1885. Their daughter Catharine was my grandmother ( third of 11 children) They moved to Dublin sometime after1892 . 8 of their childrenwere born in Dublin. Last address before my granny got married was 26 Ashworth Place, Harolds Cross,Dublin.

I will post more records (I have quite a few)

Belfast addresses I have on birth Registrations are ,69  New Lodge Road, and 16 Pinkerton St.

  • Hi Rochelle, My grandfather was Catherines brother Frank b 1887 d 1951. He married Mary McNamara on 27/3/1913. I have details on all 11 children of Wm & Lizzie.

I have the following details on Francis and Catherine Jennings - children William,Catherine, Francis, Henry & James. Catherine Jennings died (i do not have a date) and Francis remarried on 22/6/1896 to Sarah Eagleson in Belfast, they had 6 children, 5 of whom died young.

I have a marriage cert fom Roots irl for Francis and Catherine Jennings marriage on 23/5/1864 which mentions Francis father James as been a clerk from Kilcoo. I will have to search for it and send you a copy, i got it about 5 years ago. Francis was baptised in Kilcoo RC 1/11/1843 , father James mother Catherine Rogers. You can view this record on NLI Catholice parish registers -  Kilcoo Register no 05476/08 page 76. I you have a problem I can send you a copy. There are 3 other children baptised in Kilcoo and then the family moves to Ballymoney where I found 3 other children baptised. I do not know if you want to find these yourself or if you want I can let you know.?

James and Catherine Rogers got married in Kilcoo 15/8/1838. James father was Francis.

Francis is mentioned in the Tithe Applotment books 1829 Tullyacre Townland  - modern version Tullyree (Kilcoo Co Down). James brother Edward remained in Tullyree and is in Griffiths valuation 1863 for Kilcoo Tullyree Kilkeel. There is a map in Griffiths valuation which shows the location of the house and lands.

  • Thank you Brendan!

Your information is so helpful. I'm fairly new to Ireland Reaching Out, but am working to add all the records I have.

I also have some records from NLI microfilms. Very time consuming to find them but so rewarding when you find a record and you know it is correct.

If it's not too much trouble, I would appreciate the Kilcoo Reg & page numbers. I will post any I have. I entred 3 records today but they have'nt come up yet. Do the local genealogists confirm the information before letting the post go into the system?

I think our conection makes us 2nd cousins!

I new Lizzie Mulholland (William & Lizzies youngest) quite well. Her married name was Gunning. I have a great relationship with one of her grandsons and stay him and his family whenever I visit Ireland

    Thanks again

  • Hello Brendan

I found the marriage record you had mentioned  for Francis and Catharine Jennings on Roots that lists  Francis father James Mulholland as being a clerk. ( same infoI had on marriage reg I foundon irishgenealogy.ie) I also found  2 records for Francis second marriage to Sarah Eagleson June 22,1896. One record lists their mothers names which I found by searching by County Antrim ,parish disrtict Belfast. This record lists Francis mothers name being Mary not Catharine. All other info on this record is the same , including the address of 10 Grove St. Curious. I will have to do more digging.

Also, 1901 Census for Francis & Sarah lists their children. Daughter Mary was 9 years of age, which means she was born in 1892. Francis & Sarah werent married until 1896. Also, Mary was not baptized until 1901. I wonder if she was Francis daughter or maybe he adopted her .

    Regards

  • Hi Rochelle

I am impressed by your attention to detail. Daughter Mary was born 7/5/1892 Belfast as Mary Eagleson, Mother Sarah Eagleson no father listed (Irish Genealogy.ie).

I also checked out a Francis Mulholland of James and Mary McCann Bapt 2/2/1837 Drummaul parish reg 05474/13 page 23 but drew a blank. Other siblings of James & Mary Mc Cann were-

Cultworth bapt 22/4/1831 Drummaul reg 05474/11 page 69,  Rose bapt 5/12/1846 St Patricks Belfast reg 05470/02 page 119, William bapt 4/6/1867 Ballymacaldrick (irish genealogy), note the gap between 1831 and 1867??. Also father James described as a labourer not a clerk.

There was also a James and Mary Kean in the Drummaul reg, easy to mix up McCann and Kean?. There childrens details as follows Rose bapt 16/5/1834 Drummaul reg 05472/12 page 21,  Maria Isabella bapt 30/6/1828 Drummaul 05472/11 page 31. Rose bapt 2/1/1831 Drummaul 05472/11 page 57.

I also found a marriage 4/9/1991 for Mary Mulholland Ballymacdrick widow father John McKeenan to John Elliot (irish genealogy). I could find no information on any of these.

    Hope this info is helpful.

    Regards

  • Hi Rochelle, I forgot to mention Francis died 7/3/1914 at 26 Jennymount married age 73 (1841) Joiner widow Sarah present (Irish Genealogy). Note age diff between this and the 1911 census where Francis age was given as 72 (1839).

  • Hi Brendan

I've been playing with my new photo scanner and have uploaded some photos of my granny Catharine Gaffney (Mulholland) . She would have been your great aunt. I've also uploaded photos of LizzieGunning (Mulholland) who would also have been your great aunt. Lizzies might not show for a day or two as per the sites capabilities.

I'm trying to find my copy of our great granmothers photo. I had a beautiful 8x10 sepia that belonged to my aunt who passed away. I have a cousin searching for it so hopefully it will turn up.

    Regards

  • Hi Rochelle,

Sorry I did not reply sooner, I am having problems with my internet signal. Thank you for sending the photo of Elizabeth, what a beautiful photo and she looked stunning.

She reminded me of my aunt Jane (aka Babs) I do not have a photo of her. Do you know a Lucy Gunning who was a witness at Jane (Babs) Mulholland marriage to Joseph Broughal on the 16th Nov 1945 in Dublin ?

These are my records on the children of Willam and Lizzie -

Francis       b 1887 married 1913 to Mary McNamara

Bridgit        b 1889  married 1912 to Thomas Macken

    William      b 1891   dod 1912

Kate         b 1893   married 1921 to Thomas Gaffney

    Ambrose  b 1896    dod 1897

Henry      b 1899    dod 1901 - note death named as Genery

    Elizabeth b 1900    dod 1901

Martha    b 1902    married 1924 to John Kearney

Patrick Joseph b 1904 married 1938 to Mary Morrissey

Elizabeth b 1906   married 1930 to Francis Gunning

    Sarah     b 1910   dod 1910

Joseph   b 1912   married 1936 to Theresa Wynne.

In the 1911 census it states 11 children born 7 alive. Add Joseph born after census makes 12.

Lizzie Kearney was some woman !

I know Francis, Bridgit, Kate & Elizabeth Gunning  are buried in Deansgrange cemetary. Martha is buried in Mount Jerome cemetary.

I am trying to trace where the othes are buried.

    Hope this is helpful

    Many thanks

    Brendan

  • Hello Brendan

I've heard of Lucy Gunning, She was great aunt Lizzie's daughter.. I believe she moved to England and passed away of cancer some years ago.

Jane Gunning I think went by Joan. Quite the seamstress from what Betty Duke (Lucy & Joans sister) told me.

I think I've found Josephs burial information. Deansgrange, Nov 12, 1956. I have 2 photos of our great uncle Joseph. One is taken with great granny Lizziie on Mar 18,1924 which would make him 12 years old. The other photo is Joseph as an adult.looks to be in his mid 50's.

I've been scanning all the BMD registrations,NLI microfilms, as well as the few photos I have.  If you are comfortable exchanging emails, I would be happy to send you copies of everything. It would be much quicker than trying to post to the Ireland Reaching out site.Maybe we could share any new information as we search.

I also have some news articles that I dont want to post on line, but would not mind emailng to you directly.

Let me know what you think.

    Regards

    Rochelle

P.S I posted a photo of me with great Aunt Elizabeth ,talken a few years before her death, incase you missed it on her profile.

  • Hello Brendan

I'm contacting you through this site as I'm not sure you recieved my email last week. I've solved the mystery of the four women in a photo I sent you last year. I have emailed them to you with their names attached. There were also three wedding photos .

I've contacted two of great Aunt Bridget's grandchildren (second cousins like you and me) and have shared my family history photos and records with them. I'm hoping they may have some photos to share with me as well. I will keep you posted and share any photos etc that they might send me.

Hope you and your family are keeping well !

    Regards
