On the 20th of December 1909, the Volta Theatre opened its doors for the first time. 

The Volta was Ireland's first dedicated cinema. 

The cinema was established by none other that James Joyce who had attended cinemas on his travels abroad and felt that Dublin required its own picture house. 

The cinema closed in 1919 and reopend in 1921 under a new name, the Lyceum Picture Theatre.
