There is a suggestion from more than one of my relatives that my ancestor Alfred Dowling born c1809 emigrated to England and was perhaps the captain of a ship.  I have found no evidence to support this however and research suggests he was born in Chippenham!.  Would appreciate any help in solving this mystery.

  • If Alfred Dowling wasn't himself originally from Ireland, then perhaps one of the Chippenham Dowlings was. It is an Irish name, so presumably there must be an ancester at some point in hstory who crossed the water.

  • Hi Roy,

On www.rootsireland.ie/ ( a pay site) there are 3 Alfred Dowlings born in Ireland but much later than 1809:

Alfred Edward 1851 Dublin Alfred John 1859 Dublin & Alfred Martin 1899 Laois.

There were 101 Dowlings born 1810 + - 1 year but none were Alfreds.

The Tithe Applotments (1823-37 and free to search) have 776 Dowlings but no Alfreds.

  • Hello Roy,

Dowling is a common name in Counties Kilkenny and Laois.  If Alfred followed naming patterns, his first born son might be named for that relative in Ireland you seek.  Using the www.rootsireland.ie site you might be able to find your ancestor.

    Happy Hunting!
