My great, great grandfather and mother came over to the US from Ireland in the early-mid 1800s.  They had a son who was born in 1842 in West Virginia but wound up in Kentucky.  He was Richard Powers and his  wife was Ann (or Anna) Bolger.  Son's name was John.  He died in 1911 in Kentucky and served in the Confederate army during the civil war.  I am trying to find out where Richard and Ann came from.

I looked at the Griffiths Valuation survey head of household listings. This survey was taken in the mid-19th century in Ireland after your ancestors emigrated to the USA.  Both names are predominately from the counties in the south and southeast of Ireland. Powers was a rare name but Power was very common. This name was most prevalent in Co. Waterford but also found in good numbers in Co. Kilkenny, Co. Wexford and Co. Tipperary.

Bolger was most prominent in Co. Wexford followed by Co. Kilkenny and Co. Carlow.

You can go to www.rootireland.ie  and register to view the Griffiths for free. (It is a pay site to view baptismal and marriage records).

  • Hello James

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and found a marriage record for a Richard Power married to  ?  Bolger in Co. Kilkenny in 1828.   I think this record would be worth a look as its the only record I found with Power marrying Bolger.

There is a good deal on this site at the moment.  It's free to join, no membership fees, and the records that you may want to open are 40% off until Oct 13th.

    Regards,

    Anne Dennehy
