Here’s hoping and praying for results. My great, great, great Grandfather was married in Gosforth, Cumbria in 1815. He died a horrible death at the age of 71 leaving behind his wife and children. According to various census results, he was born in Bruff in 1791. Sadly no trace of this birth can be found. My family have been searching for over 30 years now, but hopefully, with the help of the internet answers might start flowing. Hopefully a Stafford tree has the birth of Robert with a question mark as to what happened to him.

  • Hi,
I found a marriage of Robert Staffick in Gosforth on the 15th Dec 1817 to a Hannah Middleton.
    Is this your Robert?
If this is him, he was born according to the 1851 census in BRAFF Westmorland, Cumbria.  But it should be Brough, Westmorland.
I would say that the hand written Census form does look like Bruff.

  • Dear Margot.    Thank you for your post. The Robert you have found is absolutely my Robert. The entry referring to Bruff Westmorland is a red herring.  For years we presumed it was Brough. But there has never been any Staffords living, being born or dying in the parish of Brough.  The true census entries list Bruff but do not mention Westmorland. The family search contain the place name Westmorland but I believe that has been added much later.  There are references to Staffords living in Bruff Limerick at the time that Robert was born. Having ruled out Brough after extensive searching, Bruff seems to me to me more likely don’t you think?   Thank you so much for your interest, it is very very much appreciated.

  • Hi Rob,
The 1851 Census says Westmorland, Bruff, but is Brough.

There is a Stafford family in Lmerick, about 1823 in the Tithe Records, a T.W.  Was his father T W?
Also the spelling was Staford. They were in Kilcolmon which is near Ardagh.
The next Stafford in Limerick was in 1901 from Wexford and were Church of Ireland.
PRONI (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) is where you would get info. if not Catholic)
And another in Limerick in 1911, she was from Jersey.
But there again it depends of they sent in there records.
