  • Hi Reg,

There is a record of the baptism of Ann Barry 1818 in DUBLIN on www.rootsireland.ie/

The record SHOULD have the parents' names (some don't) & the parish.

I couldn't find a record of the marriage on UK free BMD or on ancestry or on Family Search.

The 1851 English census on ancestry has a few possibilities for the family.

What sources did you use for the husband and son's names?

  • i Col,

l have a copy of the birth certificate of Henry Richard Johnson with the Fathers name of Henry Johnson and the mothers name of Ann Johnson nee Barry.

On thge 1851 Census of Kensington,Westminster,England we have Henry Johnson Age 32 years,Gas Fitter, born Birmingham,Warwickshire.

    Ann Johnson,Wife,Age 33 years,born Ireland,

    Henry Richard Johnson,Son,age 4 Years,Born Westminster,Middlesex.

These are the only documents i have,Despite months of research.

The Barry name is of Norman origin from the 11th century and most of the Barry's seem to come from Cork certainly the famous or infamous Kevin depending on who you are.

You now have as much information as i have and hope somebody can help me further.

    Thanks for your message Col.

    Very best wishes,

    Reg.

  • Morning Reg,

Thanks for the additional info; Irish genealogical research is a frustrating pursuit!

If you have a look at the Tithe Applotments (free) (1823-37) for the surname Barry you'll notice that there are 2140 of which 13 are in Dublin 93 in Kerry 1169 Cork 48 Kilkenny etc so as you said, Cork looks the best bet

rootsireland does not have Kerry, Clare or Carlow records so if she was from Kerry her birth record would not be on roots.

I tried a (free) site www.irishgenealogy.ie for Ann Barry 1818 and got a Cork birth record 13th Aprli 1818

Father Edmund Barry Mother Ann Hungerford

Area: Cork & Ross R C     Parish Clonakilty

Now eher's wher we can hopefully narrow it down Reg; the 1851 English Census was taken on 30 March so if Ann was 33 she waould have had to have had a birthday before March to have been born in 1818 otherwise it would have been 1817 which makes the above Cork entry look less likely.

So back to irisgenealogy.ie and there is another Ann Barry baptism record:

September 1817 Cork & Ross   Parish Schull East

Father Jno Barry  Mother Joan Daly   Sponsors Jno Lucy & Nel Hart

So, I suggest you post again to Cork Schull East parish if there is one asking whether anyone has claimed this Ann Barry.

Hopefully this will be a sledge-hammer blow to the brick wall!

    Col

  • Hi Col,

You really have been a busy chappie,Well done for the input and i shall follow up your suggestions. All dates are obviously calculated from that census.Sadly as yet i have not found them on any later census, however he was employed as a gas fitter and there was only The Gas Light And Coke Co.in existence at that time so perhaps i can locate employment records.l dont know which year she left Ireland or where she landed in England.l reallyappreciate your efforts Col.

    Very best wishes,

    Reg.
