Hello,

I am in search of the origins of my Dillon family line.  The one and only hint that I have is for a relation to my great great grandfather, John Dillon, who was born around 1830 and emigrated to the USA around 1855-186, settling in Ohio and Indiana.

According to newspaper obituaries and her marriage record from Indiana, I have determined that Anne M Dillon, born Sep 26, 1866 in Ballymahon to Thomas Dillon and Mary Barden is related to my gg grandfather, perhaps his niece.  I found that record on Family search, and it mentions the source as Ireland Births and Baptisms 1620-1881 citing birth place as 0034, Ballymahon, Longford, Ireland.  I don't know what parish that might be referencing.

I wonder if anyone can locate any information on the Dillon family from that area.  It is possible that my gg grandfather John Dillon's father's name was Patrick and his mother was either Mary or Anne Clark.  He may have had brothers named Patrick and James and a sister named Bridget.  I am trying to put all of the pieces together.

Thanks so much!

  • Hi, this is Anne’s birth record.

It says they lived in Barry.
If you type in on google/search
barry Longford map you will see it just outside Ballymahon town (nice town by the way!)

If they were Catholic they would have been in the Parish of Shrule

  • Hello Margot!

Thank you so much for your reply.  I looked through many images in the Parish of Shrule but did not find the Dillon name at all.

I then looked through the pages for Carrickedmond and found many Dillons, Clarkes and a few Bardens although I struggled to find the names that I was looking for. Does it sound like this may be where I should be looking? Are there any indexes of transcribed records anywhere that I can search? I am not sure where to go from here.

    Thank you again!

    Kathleen

  • Hi Kathleen, the place I would look is in AncestryWorlwide. You can join for a month. (I am not a member any more)
They do have ship records that have details and also some Parish records transcribed making searching easier.
All other rrecords are also there, if you see records for Ireland of Tithe, Griffiths Valuation or the BDM from 1864 listed and there is a charge, then make a note of the years or references and go back to google seearch and search the Ireland records as these are free.
The site......Familysearch.org may also help with basic searches.
If you get stuck, we are always here.
