  • Hi Ian,

The record is available on rootsireland.ie

If you haven't used the site before you will need to register. It is a pay site so it will cost but I just searched for Martin Anne 1815 + - 0 years and it came up.

I was able to check the parish as Moycullen R C.

The record will give you her parents' names.

You could then check the Tithe Applotments (free search ) which were done in 1823-27 to see where the family lived.

On ancestry there are quite a few public member trees which have her listed.

She married John Mooney 21 August 1835 Tuam Galway; the marriage record is also on rootsireland.ie

She died in Taralga NSW in 1888; I couldn't find it on NSW BDM's but one of the ancestry trees had it from the Australian Cemeteries Index and that her parents were John Martin and Mary.

I tried rootsireland for the marriage of John Martin and Mary in Galway 1800 + - 20 years and got 2 matches - 1816 & 1819 which are just too late to be Anne's parents unless....

Do you have details of the Mooneys arrival in Oz or do we need to search for that?

  • Hi Col,

Thanks so much for your reply. It's very helpful. Yes. I've done a lot on the great Roots Ireland site and it too has been very helpful. I found John 'Moony' and Anne Martyn's marriage information on there. Parents are not recorded on there but there are 2 witnesses, namely Stephen Martyn and Margaret Fitzpatrick. I can't be sure the Anne Martyn born 1815 in Ballyquirk, Moycullen is our Anne Martyn but I've researched extensively at Roots Ireland and the West Galway Research site and this Anne Martyn is the only record that fits. John Mooney was born 1810/11 in Tuam Galway and as they married in 1835, Anne would have been underage by 1 year ( at 20 ), but West Galway tell me that if they had parent consent it was possible. It's the only 'Anne Martyn' lead I have so I'm pursuing it. Now the Ann Mooney who died in Taralga in 1988 is a different one. Her maiden name was Quinn and her parents were John and Mary Quinn. Her husband was Patrick Mooney. I found her record at the Taralga Stonequarry Cemetery web site. Anne Mooney ( nee Martyn/Martin ) reportedly died in Ireland around 1856/57. Still looking for that death record. John Mooney, her husband did die in Taralga in 1889. John had four children, namely Patrick, Bridget, Thomas Francis ( my great grandfather ), and Catherine. They were all reportedly born in Tuam, Galway. John’s parents were reportedly John Mooney and Bridget Corcoran. In the Griffiths Index John Mooney was shown as tenant farmers to James Heard, Parish Aglisk, Taum, Ireland. John and his 4 children journeyed from Taum to Plymouth, where on 27 November 1856 they departed on the ship ‘Mary Anne’ for Port Jackson. On the return journey the ‘Mary Anne’ sank with all hands. T.F. Mooney died in 1926 and his obituary stated that he was a ‘nephew of Colonel Richard Martin ( Humanity Dick ). This is a Mooney family legend. I’m mainly interested in the life of Anne Martyn and if I find out about the legend along the way then that’s great. I’ve ordered a book from Amazon on the life of ‘Humanity Dick’ and can’t wait to check the index of that and read about his life, whether we’re connected or not. My first goal is to check if the Anne Martyn from Ballyquirk, Moycullen is the Anne that married John Mooney in 1835, and if proved to try and connect Anne and the witness at the wedding ‘Steven Martyn’. I got a bit excited when readin that the Martin estate extended to and included Moycullen.  Can you let me know the web site for the ‘Tithe Applottments’ please. Many thanks to you. Ian Mooney

  • Thanks Col. A number of us Mooneys here in OZ are lucky enough to be in possession of family tree books written by a relative of our ancestors in the 80's. Some great stories and clues in there. It says 'Researched and compiled by Major W.E. Hughes, MBE, JP, RL. Dedicated to our children, grandchildren and future generations.' My most prized possession is a John Sands 'Illuminated Address' presented to my great grandfather T.F. Mooney in 1917 when he retired from rural life. He's the fellow whose OBIT says 'nephew of Colonel Richard Martin' Hmmm!  Thanks
