Looking for any information about TRODDENS who lived in the horseleap/moate/kilbeggan areas in the 1800s.My branch of the family left for England in 1860 but there were many left behind.

They appear to mostly have worked in farming.-----there were quite a few families of TRODDENS in the area but do not seem to be any now which surprises me.

Any info at all would interest me however trivial it may seem.

                                Thanks

The 1827 Tithe Applotment listings for Co. Westmeath show an Edward Trodden and a Michael Trodden in St. Davids townland in Ardnurcher civil parish. Search www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing showed three Trodden records including an Edward in Killard townland in Ardlurcher parish. Possibly the same Edward from 1827 or maybe a son. Search www.askaboutireland.ie for the Griffiths. (see below).

The 1901 census has 15 Troddens listed in Co. Westmeath including this family in Killard.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Westmeath/Castletown/K…

There were 11 Troddens in the 1911 census.

  • Thanks for the reply,I already have the info you pointed out and also quite a bit more, but am hoping for somebody to have some snippet of information which will tie everything together.

For instance I know my great/great grandfather was Michael, but quite a few michaels were born about the same time 1820ish that I can not be sure which are his parents.

Maybe somebody might be trcing the same tree and read my message.

                     Thanks again

  • Hi Mike,

This is a bit of a long shot, but here goes. In 1841 Thomas Throdden/ Trodd/ Troda, aged 24 from Kilbeggen, Westmeath, Ireland and his sister Anne (aged 18) arrived as assisted immigrants in Australia. Their parents were listed as Michael TRODA (Steward) and Margaret CON LIN. On the shipping records the name is changed three times. Thomas was illiterate and a catholic (duh). Anne married John BATHIST/ BAPTHIST in Sydney in 1842 (St Marys Cath Church).

I believe that I am descended from Thomas (who married Martha Teasdale in 1844 - St Johns C of E, Parramatta). NB his name appears as TRODEN in NSW BDM records. Tracing what happens next is a bit difficult (but not moreso than actually confirming the link). Thomas and Martha seemingly had two children that survived: John Taylor THROWDEN and Thomas M THROWDEN. Both were also known as TAYLOR (I have definate links recorded in papers indicating that the TAYLOR surname was used by both).

I cannot find any further mention of the Thomas who arrived in 1841, or Anne for that matter. Both may have moved interstate. However I am pretty confident that Martha (nee TEASDALE) died in Sydney in 1888.

I am a descendant (for sure) of John Taylor THROWDEN (who was my G/Grandfather).

Not sure if this helps you at all. I have a draft family tree should you have an interest.

  • Later research found the following advertisement in U.S., The Boston Pilot (5/11/1892):

Missing Friends: Thomas and Ann Trodden, natives of Ph. of Killbeggan, County of Westmeath, Ireland. When last heard they were in Sydney, NSW, Australia about 50 years ago. Any information about them will be gratefully received by their sister Mrs John McNulty (nee Margaret Trodden), Winooski, Vt, in care of Father Whitaker, P.O. Box 16.

  • Hi------I have records of births of children of michael trodden and margaret CONLON.

CONLIN is probably misspelling,They are definately distant ancestors of mine.

They are MICK b.1822-----JOHN b1828  and MICHAEL b.1829.

This has confused me for ages,at first I thought MICK must have died so they named a later son michael, but I dont think this is so.

I suspect MICK b1822 is my g/g/g/grandad but can`t prove it because of the above mystery.

I SUSPECT the thomas and ann you mention are older siblings of whom I have no record.

I would be pleased to see your family tree.

I have loads more records which may assist you

  • Sorry Mike, no. My address is couchman4@bigpond.com. Send me yours and I'll upload my draft. I also have newspaper articles, family notices and the like that I've uploaded through Trove (digitalised newspapers). I'd certainly like to get confirmation that I'm on the right path with Trodden/Throwden being the same.
