Hello

I am trying to locate the whereabouts in County Meath the Austin Estate is as my husband's 3x great grandfather was a herdsman on this estate in the early 1820's.

Many thanks

  • I found a reference online to some estates acquired by the Irish government, and one line stated, in reference to Meath:  "There is the Austin estate of 62 acres at Balnagon which was acquired on the 14/12/64"

I don't know whether that's the estate for which you're looking, but there are two townlands in Meath, in the civil parish of Kilskeer, with the names Balnagon Upper and Balnagon Lower.  At this link you can see more info about Balnagon Upper, and through a link you will see there, you can move on to Balnagon Lower:

    https://www.townlands.ie/meath/upper-kells/kilskeer/boherboy/balnagon-u…

Although it's hard to tell exactly from the relevant maps, the civil parish of Kilskeer appears to be contained within the (larger) Catholic parish of Kilskyre, for which the parish records available online go back to 1784, so if that's the right place you should be able to find relevant parish records at this link:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0907

There may well be government records about the estate, so here's the url for the site where I found the reference above:
