My great grandmother Margaret Barry was from Cashel.  She was born in 1855 and emigrated to America in 1870.  She was the daughter of Patrick and Alice Barry.  That is all that is known fact.

According to family lore a Barry married a Beary. Recently through an online search I discovered an Ally Beary and a Parick Barry were parents of a Thomas Barry born in Cashel  December 23rd 1864.(Superintendent Register's District of Cashel, Record  No. 237).  The parents were living on Friar St. Cashel. This document even states that Ally Barry was formerly Ally Beary.

A census report  from the early 20th century shows that Ally Beay had many children so it is possible that she was also the mother of Margaret Barry.

I am looking for any information about these families in the Cashel area and Tipperary and Cork.  I am trying to close an open question about my Irish ancestry.

Thanks

Stephen

  • Hi Stephen,

I looked for others in the same site. No results, sorry.

  • Thanks Margot unfortunately I am not able to read the handwriting in these records.

Are there still Barry families and Beary families in Cashel or nearby?  In 1905 my ancestor Margaret Barry Eichler payed a visit to her homeland  with her husband.  Would that type of information been recorded somewhere such as with immigration or possibly in a locat newspaper? In the US sometimes newspapers would pick up a local interest story.

    Thanks again.

    Hi John,
This is the Ireland phone book, only landline numbers, are listed.
    https://www.eirphonebook.ie/q/name/where/tipperary/who/beary/?customerT…

This is the Tipperary Star newspaper site, if you wrote to them someone may help.

In Ancestry they do have ship records, to the USA and from the USA. quite a lot of detail, you would be able to track your 1905 travel.
I am not a member anymore, sorry.

    Try the newspaper.
    keep digging!

Additional research using local church records shows that Ally Beary and Patrcik Barry of Friar St Cashel had additional children during the late 1850s and 1860s.  Sons Thomas 1864, Matthew 1862 and John Barry 1857 (or so) and maybe a daughter Mary 1855 or 1856  all show birth in Cashel to go along with my ancestor Margaret Barry 1855 or 1856.  Margaret's obituary in 1930 mentions unmaned niceses and nephews so there once was some lineage from her siblings.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Saratoga Springs New York USA

  • John, I just saw this..............it's a James Keane and Mary Barry, in Caher.
It says he was born in Philadelphia this is the 1911 Census and he was at the same address in 1901 with his sister Mary, are they related to you?

Margot I believe that this Mary (b. 1837) is too old to be the sister of my ancestor Margaret Barry (b.1855) but might possiblly be a sister of her mother Ally (Alice) Beary (b.1831).

    Thanks   John

I am still interested in finding out about my Barry and Beary ancestors from Cashel.  It seems that they left Ireland in the late 1860s or early 1870s.  Patrick Barry 1815 and Alice (Ally) Beary 1828 had Catherine, MArgaret, John, Patrica, Mathew, and probably Thomas and Mary during the 1850s and 1860s.  Patrick Sr and Alice show on America records only briefly and either died soon upon arrival or moved, maybe even returned to Ireland.  They had a son-in-law Timothy Flood who was also from Cashel.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks   Stephen.
