I am looking for information on my Bartley Family. My Great-Grandfather, Thomas Bartley (1850-1924), immigrated to New York, USA in about 1869 from (I think)  Granard?, County Longford, Ireland and was a tailor in NY. The only information I have about his family that he left behind in Ireland was from his death certificate. Father: John Bartley, Mother: Elizabeth Somers. Mary Bartley Ward

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched in Roots Ireland for a baptismal record for Thomas and did not find a record with the parents names shown. Also, did not find a marriage record for John and Elizabeth. Checked the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing.for Co. Longford and the only John Bartly/Bartley was in Longford town. I also checked the parish register for Granard RC parish and reviewed the 1850 records but no Thomas Bartley  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0167  The records are in Latin.

Roots Ireland also has records for the Church of Ireland parish in Granard.

Did Thomas have siblings? Any other family info?

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

You can also add Thomas' story to our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

  • I don't know if Thomas Bartley had any siblings. I just assumed that he was not the oldest son since he immigrated to USA & was a tailor in NY. I'm not sure if that was his occupation in Ireland or he learned the trade in NY. The only other thing that I know is a story that his son, my Grandfather, Thomas Joseph Bartley (1882-1972) told me. When he was 5-years old his father, Thomas Bartley, took Thomas Joseph  & his older brother, John Aloysius to Granard to visit the grandparents. He said that his grandparents lived in a big stone house near a river & there was a suit of armor inside. Thomas Joseph celebrated his 6th birthday - 3/12/1888 - in Ireland & he missed the Blizzard of '88 back in NY. He also said that his grandparents wanted to keep him in Ireland, but obviously they didn't.

I have checked the Griffiths Valuation very briefly, but I'll try again. Thank you for your quick reply & tips on research. Mary Bartley Ward

Check out this 1901 census record in Abbeylara which is not far from Granard.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Longford/Abbeylara/Abb…; I think this is your family. Note that the unmarried son Patrick was a tailor. Here is Patrick in 1911 and likely Eliza had passed. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Longford/Abbeylara/Abb…

Eliza died in 1902 , however, when I went to look at the image, it was for a different person.

NameELIZABETH BARTLEYYear of Death1902Group Registration ID4585342SR District/Reg AreaGranardDeceased Age at Death87

Patrick died October 4, 1912 of heart disease.  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

    John died in 1881   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

The Abbeylara baptismal records start in 1854 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0139  which explains not finding baptismal records.

  • I found a baptism of a sister to your Thomas in Abbeylara Catholic parish, so fits with Roger's findings - Margaret Bartly baptised 23rd April 1859 (right hand page), parents Joannis (John) Bartley and Elizabetha (Elizabeth) Somers. The residence is Abbeylara, so likely in or near to the town, the godparents are a Thomas Bartley and Mary Cunningham.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The 1911 census indicates that Anne had nine children but how many were living in 1911 is unclear. Four were with her. There was a son Joseph who was the informant when his father died

This likely the baptismal record for John Bartley.
