My Great Grandfather was Thomas Bermingham and he came to Australia in 1874 from Ireland.
He was born in about 1857 and was Baptised at Daingean, County of Offaly.
His parents were Valentine Bermingham and his mothers maiden name was Mary Keenan. His father may of also went by the name of John and Mary may also of been known as Biddy or Bridget.
Thomas was a twin to James and had an older brother called Patrick and younger brothers John and Michael. He also had a younger sister called Mary.
At the time of Thomas's Baptism his family's address was Cruit.
I am trying to find out about whether any of Thomas's family stayed in Ireland and where his parents are buried.
Any assistance to fill the picture in would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Matthew Bermingham - Cairns, Australia

Dear Matthew
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query
As you may know, Daingean is a town in the Civil Parish of Killaderry, Co. Offaly. The records of the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Daingean begin in 1795 for baptisms and 1820 for marriages. There are also church death records dating from 1880: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&churchid=723&CityCounty=Offaly&CityCounty=Offaly&parish=Philipstown
As well as checking the parish and civil records on www.familysearch.org or www.rootsireland.ie for your Bermingham ancestors, you could check Griffith?s Valuation, a land survey taken between 1847-1864 for occurrences of the family name in Daingean: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doPlaceSearch&Submit.x=35&Submit.y=9&Submit=Submit&freetext=Place+Name&countyname=KING%27S&baronyname=&unionname=&parishname=KILLADERRY
You could also have a look at the 1901/1911 Census for similar occurrences: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
I also provide a link to information on graveyard surveys that have taken place in the county:

Best of luck with your search

Hi Matthew,
I'm not going to be able to help you much with finding Thomas's family in Ireland (at the moment) but I have a sneaking suspicion that you and I may be related through the Bermingham's.
My 4x Great Grandmother was Bridget Bermingham. She married Edward Heaton and they had 5 children that we know of - Mary, Patrick, Ellen, Jane and Valentine born Rahan parish, Kings Co. (Offaly) in the 1820's. Valentine is who I am descended from and I have a hunch that Valentine was named after a family member, possibly a brother of Bridget, Valentine Bermingham. Bridget herself was born circa 1798.
Valentine Heaton and his siblings came out to Australia in the 1840's and 1850.
A brother of Bridget, Willuam Bermingham had a daughter Mary in 1831 in Ballycommon, Offaly and one of the sponsors was Valentine Bermingham. That name is as rare as hens teeth so he must be related.
Cheers
