Hi, I'm trying to find out about my granfather and G Grandparents. They were I think from Tullamore Co. Offaly. My gf served in WW1 and settled in Leeds W Yorks. The family name was Berry, gf was James,we think he had a brother Christopher. Also looking for the Teeny family from probably the same area. My mother was named Catherine Margaret(Berry) after Catherine Margaret Teeny who I think was James' mother ... any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I checked the 1901 census for the area around Tullamore. Any possibility that this is your familY?

I could not find a Christopher Berry or any Teeny/Teeney families in Co. Offaly.

  • yes Roger thank you we think this is them.. I had a photo of grandad with someone else both in 1st WW army uniforms.. I was always told that it was his brother Chris. My son had found this entry but the lack of a Christopher made us wonder. Maybe he could have been born shortly after 1901. Do you have any links I could use search Irish BMD's? We have come up against a brick wall with Teeny I even think that maybe she is just Margaret and that mum was given Margaret as her middle name.Cant find her marriage or any births record for her or James and the kids... anyway...

Thanks very much for your help,

    Regards

  • Cath:

I found a civil marriage index record for the fourth quarter of 1878 for a James Berry in the Tullamore registration district. One of the possible female spouse names on the record was a Margaret Tierny. The marriage was recorded in Volume 3 page 523. Tierny or Tierney is very close to Teeny. Is 1878 too far back?

By the way, I did locate a 4th quarter 1901 civil birth index record for a Christopher Berry in Tullamore but would he have been too young for WW1?

I use www.findmypast.ie to search for index records for BMDs but it is a subscription service.

If you want to try to get a copy of the marriage record, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Roger..thanks again ! We also made that connection last night but it was very late so we havent followed it up yet. Yes, you can see how Tierny spoken with an Irish accent could fool us yorkshire folk !! We estimate that she was born late 1850's so yes the time is right, she would have been around 20yrs old. We are using Ancestry.co.uk, my son found the record with Tierny but no parental info on it, so that's prob the same one. Christopher would only have been 13 at the start of the war, I know a lot of young ones did volunteer and lie about their age and that no checks were made to verify, he would have been 17 by the end, volunteered half way through? mmm ... maybe. I have one surviving Auntie left, my mothers sister.James Berry  (junior) was their father. She has helped me as much as her memory would allow but she is very certain that in the photo of her dad is his brother Christopher. I will go back to see her... thank you once again for your help... my son is now looking for army records for Chris and Ive got to find out where Margaret was born and her parents.

    thank you

    Cath.
