Searching for birth details of my gfather Peter Jones who was said to have been born in Dublin. His brother Patrick however was born in Drogheda (Louth) in 1853 and I have a baptismal record for that (St Mary's).
Searches in Dublin, Louth and Meath have been unsuccessful.
Their father Edward joined the 65th Regiment which came to NZ in 1856. They remained in NZ.
Patrick would have been the elder by 2-3 years.

  • Geejay, I see the Louth baptism and the mother is Murphy, can see no birth in Dublin with a mother Murphy, you can see Dublin Church records here for free https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/In 1855 there is a Peter Jones father is not Edward and the mother is Sheridan.

    As he left with the military in 1856 it is possible the child was born enroute or born in Dublin and baptised by the a chaplin. Otherwise I can see no suitable baptism on Roots Ireland either. Civil records were not required until 1864.

    As a matter of interest I live in St Mary's parish Drogheda.

    Good Luck

  • Thanks for looking Pat,

    I can accept he could have been born en route, although his death record shows his place of birth as Dublin (my father, also Peter, was the informant).
    I guess with the pending departure of the 65th Regiment there may not have been time or opportunity for a church baptism.

    How would I go about searching the records for his father Edward and mother Mary Murphy? One family file mentions Edward was a blacksmith, presumably in Drogheda. Perhaps the regiment gave better prospects for the family around that time frame

  • HI Again, if the parish is St Marys we are not in geat shape, the current church was completed in 1833 I think and while baptisms commence in 1835 but marraiges records are only available from 1870, these are church records, civil records for all commenced in 1864, so St Marys is poor in that regard, I looked at the baptisms for Meath (St Marys is in the diocese of Meath but the parish is in south Drogheda and East Meath) church and civil boundaries do not always be the exact same. The records may jsut be misplaced as they obviously were keeping records as the baptisms are there so we live in hope.

    Post 1835 to 1850 there are a lot of Jones baptisms in St Marys, however I was hopioing there would only be one mother there are several so cannot say it is likely they were younger siblings of your Edward, the mothers names included Churchill (odd one but I have a neighbour of that name) Flood; Donagh and Kearns or more like Kierans which is a name here. Also some names I cannot make out from the transcripton, the actual registers are here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0960

    In Griffiths Valuation there are a five Jones land occupiers in St Marys, mainly ladies except a Simon, this is 1851, no sign of a black smith, there was  a big fall off in blacksmiths post famine circa 1850, very few horse left I think. you can see that here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS…;

    Without been able to establish his parents it is neigh on impossible to pin down his location, there is a good site here on Louth and if you see any grave inscription mentioned of interest I should be able to get the transcription for you as I have most of those transcribed but some graves in St Marys did not open until 1903 and peopel were buried in a variety of graveyards around the place, I see some Jones buried in the Protestant graveyard in the 1700s in St Marys but you did not have to be Protestant to be buried there as the Church of Ireland at the time were responsible for burials.
