Cornelius "Connor" Black is my 2 X Great Grandfather. I find him in the 1821 Census in Carrickakillew, Drumlumman, County Cavan. According to this Census, his parents are James and Bridget Black (each born about 1761) and his siblings, Patrick (born about 1803) and Thomas (born about 1806). Cornelius was buried on 15 March 1850 in Drumlumman South, Cavan. His wife, Bridget Brennan, and most of his children came to America after his passing and took up residence in New York City. I have traced these cousins to present day on the East Coast.

Did any of Cornelius' family members also go to America? There is no sign of the Black family in Drumlumman in the 1901 Census.  It might very well have been possible for his siblings Patrick and Thomas. It's less likely that his parents ever did. My challenge is that there are so many Patrick and Thomas Blacks in USA. It's such a common name. I have come up empty so far. Any clues would be most appreciated.

Once the Covid pandemic eases a bit more, my wife and I plan on visiting Ireland. I now know that at least three of my Great Grandparents were born in Cavan. First stop : County Cavan. Thanks for your assistance.

With gratitude,

Jerry

  • Dear Patricia,

Thanks for your work. Everyone there is simply amazing. I do have these baptismal records. My Great Grandmother, Margaret, is first on your list. I have been able to trace all of her siblings to present day relatives living in various places in America. I can't begin to tell you what a gift and blessing it's been to connect with my Irish relatives. We have exchanged stories, photos, and thoroughly enjoyed these meaningful connections.

I apologize for my confusing message. What I'm trying to find out is if Cornelius' brothers might have come to America. In the 1821 Census in Carrickakillew (Drumlumman, Cavan) we have:

    James 60

    Bridget 60

    Thomas 15

    Pat 18

    Conner 24 (my 2 X great grandfather)

Did Thomas or Pat come to America? I don't think his parents James and Bridget did, but you never know.

I'll make a donation to this wonderful organization this afternoon.

    With gratitude,

    Jerry
