I am looking for more information on the family of my Great-Grandmother Bridget Boland. Before her marriage she probably originally lived in Lisinaska North in Killimor Bologue Parish. She married Edward Treacy on Jan. 20, 1857 in Killimor, Galway. The witnesses were John Boland & Michael Burke. They lived at a farm at Derrew, Kilquain Parish, South of Killimor and North of Portumna. There were Boland families living in Lisaniska North, which is about 3 miles Northwest of Derrew and in Muingbaun (Clonkelagh or Clonkela), which borders and is just North of Derrew. Bridget & Edward had 10 children. She is listed in Tracey’s of Galway page 2 and in the 1901 Irish Census for Derrew, Kilquain. She died Jan. 20, 1907 Killimor, Galway.
I found records of a Bridget Boland born either on Jan. 15, 1828 in Tynagh, Galway or on both June 15, 1830 & July 8, 1834 in Ballinasloe, Galway.
Bridget Boland Church Baptisms
Surname First Name Year Where Born Parents

Boland Bridget 15Jun1830 Ballinasloe Bernard Boland & Bridgt Daws
Bolan Bridget 08Jul1834 Ballinasloe Bernard Bolan & Bridget ? (Daws?)
There were many different Boland’s who acted as witnesses at Treacy Family events:
Baptisms Children of Edward Treacy & Bridget Boland
Name Date Location Sponsors
Bridget Tressy 26 Feb 1860 Killimor Martin Boland & Mrs. J Boland
Catherine Trassy 14 Aug 1864 Killimor Thomas Bolan & Callagy
Michael Treacy 07 Nov 1866 Killimor Laurence Bolan & Anne Bolan
Sarah Treacy 22 Mar 1869 Killimor Bernard Boland & M A Treacy
Treacy Marriages
Edward Treacy & Bridget Boland 20Jan1857 Killimor John Boland & Michael Burke
John Treacy & Winifred Scully 5Mar1859 Portumna Martin Boland & Mary Broderick
John Boland & Mary Treacy 30Jan1861 Killimor Martin Boland & Mary Burke
There is no record of Bridget Boland being born to them, but this Boland family matches the other events better than anything else that I have found:
James Boland & Mary McDonagh were married Feb. 27, 1832 in Tynagh. They moved to the Killimor area. A James Boland age 73 died in 1879 and a Mary Boland age 76 died in 1880 both in the Portumna area. 5 children:
Farril? born 1833 in Killimor & another born Jul. 21, 1834, probably died as an infant.
Martin born Jan. 25, 1835 in Killimor, a Martin Boland is a Sponsor at the 1860 Baptism of Bridget Tressy, Michael’s sister.
Thomas born Dec. 8, 1841 in Killimor, a Thomas Boland is listed as a Sponsor at the 1864 Baptism of Catherine Trassy, Michael’s Sister.
Laurence born May 8, 1844 in Killimor, a Laurence Boland is listed as a Sponsor at the 1866 Baptism of Michael Treacy.
Anne born Oct. 16, 1846 in Killimor, an Anne Boland is listed as a Sponsor at the 1866 Baptism of Michael Treacy.

James:
I read over your family history and I would tend to agree that the James Boland/Mary McDonagh couple are more likely the parents of Bridget. Bridget's age in the 1901 census and the age shown in her death record are consistent pointing to a year of birth around 1840 which fits with the gap between Martin and Thomas.
Do you know the name of the second son born to Bridget and Edward?

Catherine born Dec. 15, 1864
Michael Charles born Nov. 8, 1866
Sarah born Mar. 22, 1869
Honoria (Nora) born July 2, 1871
James born Jul. 12, 1873

James:
The "nornal" naming pattern was:
first son paternal grandfather
second son maternal grandfather
third son father
In your case, Edward and Bridget named their first son after the father. I'm guessing that Michael may have been Edward's father and James was named after Bridget's father which ties to your theory about James Boland and Mary McDonagh. Just speculation on my part.

Roger,
Edward’s father was Patrick Treacy and his mother was Mary Egan. The Treacy Family story is that Patrick came from Tynagh before moving to Derrew. Maybe that is also true of the Bolands.
These are the children of Mary Egan & Patrick Treacy, all Church Baptism Records were from Killimor:
Edward possibly born 1830-1831 (I can’t find a birth record for him)
Patrick born 07Jan1833
Mary born 12Mar1835.
John born 20Jun1836
James born 30Sep1839
Nicholas born 13Mar1843
Another Mary born 24Feb1846
Bridget born 07Jan1849
Michael born 25Mar1852
If you are correct about the Irish Naming Patterns, the record below might match up better:
Children of Michael Boland & Bridget Nugent born in Tynagh
Source Surname First Name Year County
Church Baptism Boland Mary 1825 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Bridget 15Jan1828 Co. Galway (possibly my Gr.-Grandmother)
Church Baptism Boland Margaret 1830 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Thomas 04Dec1831 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Patrick 1833 Co. Galway

James:
I think an 1828 year of birth is too early based on Bridget's age in the 1901 census and her death record. By the way, I went on Roots Ireland for Killimor RC records. The only Bridget Treacy I found was a Bridget Trasy baptism in 1849.

Roger,
The 1828 date seems a little early since Bridget was married in 1857, but I’m sure that the ages given to the census were not always accurate.
The only other Bridget Boland that I could find is close to the correct time frame and area is below, but I could not find out more about them:
Children of Bernard Boland & Bridget Daws born in Ballinasloe
Source Surname First Name Year County
Church Baptism Boland Fergus 1829 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Bridgt 15Jun1830 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Bolan Bridget 08Jul1834 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Bernard 08Apr1836 Co. Galway
There were other Boland families living at Lisanka North and also Muinbaun (Clonkelagh), which borders Derrew, just to the North. I believe that this family was related to both Bridget & Edward. Mary Trassy might be Edward’s sister born in 1835 and John Boland might be Witness1 at Bridget & Edward’s 1857 Killimor marriage:
Children of John Boland & Mary Trassy born in Killimor or Clonkelagh; they married 30Jan1861 in Killimor
Source Surname First Name Year County
Church Baptism Boland Thomas 30Apr1864 Killimor Co. Galway
Civil Birth Boland Thomas 23May1864 Clonkila Eyrecourt Co. Galway
Church Baptism Bolan Margaret 06Jan1867 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Bolan Mary 1869 Co. Galway
Civil Birth Boland Catherine 02Aug1872 Co. Galway
Church Baptism Boland Elizabeth 28Nov1874 Killimor, Co. Galway
Civil Birth Boland Martin 10Dec1877 Clonkelagh , Eyrecourt Co. Galway
There might not be any records of Bridget or Edward’s births or they might not be online. Hopefully that might change in the future.
Thanks for the help.
Jim
