  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Catherine's maiden name was McManus not McMorrow. See last record on this link for the birth record for Mary Brogan in 1864 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1864/03604/2329507.pdf

I searched for a marriage record for a Brogan/McMorrow and Brogan/McManus and did not find a record in Co. Roscommon. I will search further for additional records.

  • As background, civil registration of births started in 1864 in Ireland. It appears that Mary was the only child born 1864 or later whose birth was registered.

I have searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland for all of Ireland with no success using both McManus and McMorrow as the mother's maiden name for the marriage and baptismal records.

Castlerange is in Fuerty civil parish and the records for Athleague/Fuerty RC parish are available.

According to Catherine's death record, she was age 50 in 1876. If this age was accurate, she likely had her children before 1864. There are two RC parishes just to the north of Athleague/Fuerty which did not have baptismal records for the 1850s and most of the 1860s. So I'm wondering if before 1864, the family lived north of Castlerange and as a result no records are available.

  • I have Catherine's death certificate ....I have seen the one that says McManus....Mary Brogan is my Great Grandmother....I have her birth certificate (John, Patrick's brother was there at her birth and said that Catherine's maiden name was McMorrow on the birth certificate)...Mary was born in 1864 and the siblings are all listed in the 1880 census in the US with their birth dates....I have a feeling that Patrick may have come from a family in County Meath but have yet to prove that and I'm not sure how he would have met Catherine....they both married late in life which makes me wonder if they were first marriages.

thank you for your help Roger !!!! if you come up with anything else please let me know!!!!

  • Frank:

The 1880 census shows that all the Brogan children were born in New York State. Is that a mistake?

  • I have looked at that a thousand times and never noticed that....either it is not my mary or they put new york as their birthplace....she put her wrong age but I thought that was so she could be head of household...she did go to America with her uncle John....it says on her obit.....hmmm....thank you for pointing that out

  • so the obit does not mention the name of the uncle that she came over to America with (I assumed John because I knew he was an uncle....never assume in genealogy lol) the obit says she died in 1937 at the age of 72 which has her birth in 1865 and she came to America when she was 16....which would make it 1881....sighs.... so I'm throwing that census out....she may have been an only child...I haven't found any other children born to Patrick and Catherine....I am assuming (again) that they married late because of the potato famine....in any case....I still can't find where they married or where they were born
