Looking for Bryan Flaherty born about 1830, Galway. His son Michael Flaherty born about 1850 married Margaret Kilgarriff daughter of John Kilgarriff in 1872.

  • Hi EBell

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your email.

I think the best way for you to find out more about Bryan would be to locate the civil marriage record of his son?s marriage to Margaret. That record would give Bryan?s name, his wife?s name and the townland from which they came. If they married in the bride?s home parish, as was usually the case, Michael and Byran?s home townland may differ from that of Margaret. Once you have located the townland information you could look up Griffith?s Valuation, a property tax survey carried out between 1847 and 1864. Bryan would very likely be listed on it if he occupied land.

You can access the civil and church records for Kilkerrin/Clonberne and any relevant civil records by searching www.rootsireland,ie (a subscription site) and/or www.familysearch.org.

You can access the Griffith?s Valuation for free here: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Best of luck and Happy St. Patrick?s Day

  • Thanks for you reply email.

I have the marriage information/certificate and Michael Flaherty's mother is not listed.

Bryan Flaherty, Michael's father was listed as deseased and a landholder. No specific information regarding where Bryan held land. Is there a deeds office in Galway that has land deeds between 1850-1872. I have checked Griffiths, but cannot define which Bryan Flaherty was Michael's father. I have also have had a local cousin tested for dna, but with any new leads. Are their birth registers back in the 1850's. I have search Rootsireland.ie but still not conslusive.

Any new hints would be appreciated.

    Thaks!

  • Unfortunatley, as civil registeration of births, deaths and marriage doesn't begin until 1864 threre are no civil records of those events before that date. In terms of land records you could contact the land registry a the link below. The only records really available for Galway are the archives of Galway City Council and Galway County Council. The latter's archive collection index you can check at http://www.galway.ie/en/Services/ArchivesService/
