Hello

My name is Terry Robinson and I am looking for any information on Michael Burke, my g.g. grandfather who I have been told was born in Mitchelstown (1830), came to St. Louis Missouri and married Ellen Keefe, possible O'Keefe. They had 3 sons, Ellen died, was buried in St. Louis. Michael remarried and moved to Irish Creek (later to be called Wheaton) Kansas. He had 3 sons- Lawrence, Edward (my g.grandfather) and Thomas. It is a very good possibility that Michael's father was Lawrence Burke and his mother was Julia O'Briend. I have no way to confirm. Any information on the Burke family from that area would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Terry

There is a record of the baptism of Michael Burke in Mitchellstown Cork 1830 on www.rootsireland.ie/

There is a charge to view the full record but it MAY have one or both parents' names; they are not Lawrence & Julia however

Unfortunately I couldn't find the record on www.irishgenealogy.ie/ which is a free site

There are 252 Burkes in Cork in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 which are free online but Ballygiblin and Mitchellstown are not in the list of parishes or townlands!

  • Hello!

I was thrilled to receive your information so, so quickly. What a blessing that is. I will order the record and see where it takes me. I have hit somewhat of a brick wall until I found this site. You made my day!

  • Hi Terry

Laurence Burke is a name symnoninous with Croughevoe townland in the Ballygiblin area of Mitchelstown parish. Peter Robinson ships which sailed from Queenstown Cobh Cork were used to move tenants off the Lord Kingston estate in this area from 1825 onwards in a effort to reduce labour on estates whilst transferring from crop to grassland agriculture in early 1800's.
