Cantwell--Edward or Edmund 1837-1880 possibly emigrated to US in 1850.  May have relatives who also came US: Michael & Patrick.  His trade in US was lithographer.

Married Margaret Toomey 1842-1880 in Philadelphia PA 1856.  She may have had relatives John & Richard who emigrated to US.

They had 11 children all born in PA:  Richard 1857-?; James 1858-1931; Francis 1860-?; Mary 1862-?; Ann 1864-1899; Honora 1867-?; Edward 1871-1931; Joseph 1872-?; Margaret 1873-1875;

Walter 1876-?; Nicholas 1880-?.

Because Margaret died within a few months of Nicholas' birth and Edward died a few months later, the family scattered and no info is available in US.

Dolan--Francis 1819-1864 married Margaret ? approx 1823-1903 in US about 1947.

Francis emigrated via Liverpool 1846; his trade was carpenter.  They had 6 children: Michael 1848-?; Ann 1850-1850; Frank 1851-1906; Mary 1854-1919; James Joseph 1855-1869; Margaret 1857-?.  Nothing is known about these famillies

Any info on these families appreciated.

  • Hi Kathleen,

    Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, Ellis Island), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. Shipping manifests can also be checked to indicate a point of departure.

    You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ .

    You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

    I wish you luck in your search.

    Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • My wife's mother [and her family] is a Cantwell from PA that we cannot find a connection with.

    My wife and her mother have taken DNA tests in hopes we can find a Cantwell connection either here in the US, or in Ireland.

    Ireland XO is working on a DNA project but little info is forthcoming.
