My 3g grandparents Thomas Cantwell and Margaret Kendrick were married Jan 31 1839 in Boherlahan Tipperary. On the actual marriage certificate Margaret’s name is spelled Condrick. Witnesses were Toby Butler and ? Power. I am looking for their families - parents and siblings. They eventually wound up in Chicago Il, first appearing in Wisconsin in 1851. Margaret had a sister Mary who married a Butler and also wound up in Chicago with her kids but no husband. Just wondering if there are any folks by the name of Cantwell or Kendrick in cemeteries in the area or any descendants still living in the area? Thanks a lot. Margaret Bradley

  • Dear Margaret:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome.  I note the marriage record that you refer to and to the names of the witnesses which I read as: Tobias Butler and Michael Power.  I don't see where there are any references to online graveyard transcriptions for the several graveyards in the area.  I will make enquiries for you.  The parish registers are not indexed on the National Library of Ireland website, so that you will need to go through the Boherlahan register to find the children of this couple.  Hopefully, there will be a name of a townland associated with this family as this will assist you with tracing any cousins forward in your research.  Please let me know if I can do anything further for you and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

    All the best,

  • Thanks Jane! What did you mean by Boherlahan registers? And are you saying they lived in a town other than Boherlahan? Best Margaret

  • What I meant were the parish registers which are available online.  They are on the NLI (National Library of Ireland) website.  The ink is:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0247    As to your query where they lived, having the name of a townland is very helpful as that will narrow down families as well as allowing further research with land records, census information, etc.

  • Ok thanks! I did find a possible baptism for Mary Kendrick (1810) sister of my Margaret to William Kendrick and Julian Hartigan in Ardmayle. Then Mary Kendrick and husband Thomas Butler had children in Thurlesbeg. So I guess those are the townlands. Is anyone on this list from those towns do you know? Thanks Margaret

  • MBradley,

I notice your interest in Kendrick family.  My gg grandfather Patrick Kendrick was married 1 Dec 1832 in Boherlahan, Tipperary to Joanna Catherine Lyons.  All their children were born in the neighboring parish of Killenaule.  They immigrated to the US in 1852 first to Warren RI and then to Rehoboth, MA. I wonder if our families are connected. Our records also show "Condrick".
