My 2rd Great Grandmother, Anne Carr was born 14 Jul 1830 somewhere in Ireland. She died 04 Nov 1901 in San Francisco, CA. I have reason to believe she first came to New York City, NY sometime in the late 1830's or early 1840's. She has, what I presume to be, a brother named William Carr, also born in Ireland about November 1832. They are buried together in the family mausoleum in Colma, CA. Anne Carr married George W. Duffield sometime around 1850 (give or take) and relocated to San Francisco, CA. She sailed from New York City on November 20, 1853 on the SS Star of the West. She states on several US Federal Census years that she was born in Ireland and her parents were also born in Ireland. I don't know their names.
Where she and her brother are from in Ireland I do not know and would really like to find out where. I don't know of any other family members. Death Certificates for both Ann and William were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. I have no idea where to start to look for them and would appreciate any help I can get.
Thank you.

Unfortunately the name Carr is extremely common in Ireland and is to be found in every county in the country. In the 1901 census there were 3644 people of that name. Not to mention 5529 people named Kerr (a common variant).
Going by Griffiths Valuation (1848 ? 1864) the county where the name was most common was Donegal, followed by Down, Galway & Tyrone.
Without some clue from US sources, I would say it will be very difficult for you to trace the family origins in Ireland. It?d be a needle in a haystack. Have you looked for obituaries, military records, marriage records, undertakers records etc in the hope that these may give a clue, both as to where she and her brother originated but also their parents names?

Hi Helynne
There are 3 Anne Carrs baptismm records 1832 on www.rootsireland.ie/
1 is Down , 1 Westmeath & Anne-Jane is Antrim
There are 3 William Carrs 1832: Antrim, Wicklow and Longford so Antrim looks like the common county.
It costs to view the full record but it will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names.
However I found that William's record was from St Patrick's Belfast R C but Ann Jayne's wasn't so whether that tells us they were unrelated I'm not sure.

Thank you to both who responded to my query. I've exhausted all avenues here in America to try and track down a location and/or parents names. She has certainly left me a mystery to unravel to be sure. To Col- I will certainly take a look at the leads you provided, it is much appreciated. Again thanks to both of you.

I too have been researching the Carr / Kerr name in Ireland, Leitrim being the county and have great difficulty as they used both Carr and Kerr and I have even found Car.
By chance I found this website by an old friend of mine named Carr based in Cork Ireland and he has a lot of Carr stuff on it including names of people called Carr he noted on ships lists to America.
Maybe you will find something to help http://www.reunitedfamily.com/Happy Hunting and revert if you have a question.
