I am trying to find information on Catherine and Michael Keane, sister and brother who on their Convict records state born in Castlebar,Mayo. They were convicted  together of stealing 3 sheep in 1849. Catherine is recorded as a housemaid.

Catherine sent to Tasmania for 7 years . Michael born 1831 died in Richmond prison before he could be transported.

Catherine born 19/4/1832 died in Longford, Tasmania in 1925, she married John Smith and they had 9 children.

I would love to find their parents names or any information about their life in Ireland

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the RC baptismal records for Castlebar start in 1838 so if Catherine and Michael were baptized in that parish, records would not be available. I checke Roots Ireland and they did not have any Mayo baptismal records for a Catherine Keane from 1826-1836.  There were two Michael Keane records but not in parishes bordering Castlebar.

You may want to post Catherine's story on our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Unfortunatley Catherines brother Michael Keane born 1931 died in Richmond (Bridewell) Prison in 1850, he did not come to Australia.

They were convicted together of sheep stealing in 1849 Castlebar, Mayo.
