I'm looking for birth and marriage information & records on Catherine Larkin born in Ireland who married Nicholas Murphy also born in Ireland, he possibly in County Wexford.  I'm not sure where either was born but after marriage they lived in Ralph, Fethard on sea, County Wexford Ireland.  They had 2 daughters that I have knowledge of :  Johanna Murphy, born about 1838  and Anne Murphy born about 1840 but I can't find birth/baptism records for either daughter.

I do have records for these 4 starting in 1856 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada where Johanna married Patrick Power in Jan. 1856 in Kingston and Anne married Michael Wickham in Kingston in 1861.   At Johanna's marriage in 1856 the church record indicates both her parents were there.  Any help in locating where Catherine Larkin was born and when as well as a marriage record to Nicholas Murphy, even when they moved to Canada would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Helen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on two subscription sites, Find My Past and Roots Ireland and was unable to locate the marriage record or the baptismal records for the two daughters. Likely the events occurred in a church which no longer has records back to the late 1830s.

You may want to add the emigration story for Nicholas and Catherine to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Hello Roger, thank you for such a quick response.  I have a subscription to ancestry and did my own DNA there, my brother also.  There are several matches, a couple with Catherine Larkin in their tree but no documentation of any sort.  Their years do not match up either.  There is a birth record for a possible daughter Catherine Murphy Baptized in 1832, mother Catherine Larkin and father Murphy - no first name and no leads to follow from there.  There's another record for a Nicholas Murphy, father Murphy & again no first name.  This younger Nicholas born 1834 may be the Nicholas Murphy listed as a witness at Johnanna's wedding in Kingston.  I've searched the Catholic church records as published by the NLI with no luck which has led me to wonder if they were not originally from County Wexford.  Someone in the past gave me information about Nicholas Murphy leasing lands at Ralph, Fethard, County Wexford (not Tipperary)  but finding no records for him or his wife Catherine I've tried to expand my search outward.  Still no luck.  The most recent find was the marriage record for their daughter Johanna Murphy to Patrick Power in Kingston, Ontario on Jan. 7, 1856.   Patrick Power is the son of John Power and Johanna Cullen, both of Fethard on sea, County Wexford.  That record I have found -  they married Sept. 10, 1829 - records kept at Poulfur Church.

All records in St. Mary's Cathedral in Kingston, Ontario give the same parent names for Johanna and her sister Anne consistently so I definitely feel these are the correct people.  Trying to make the connection to my DNA matches has made me more determined to try to find Catherine & Nicholas's data.  I have wondered when Catherine & Nicholas emigrated to Canada, perhaps it's earlier than I thought.  However Canada has very little in the way of early records so I'm stymied.     Helen

There is a volunteer run site called Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com  You can load your raw Ancestry DNA data and get matches with people who tested with another company and loaded their data to Gedmatch. Alos, My Heritage is allowing free uploads of DNA data from other companies thru December 16th. You will get additional matches. Good luck with your family research.

  • Since my last post about this couple - Catherine LARKIN and Nicholas MURPHY - I have found Baptism records in County Wexford for several other children.  One is named   ANASTIUM MURPHY.    What I am wondering is if this could be my ANNA MURPHY?  Would someone know what the name ANASTIUM translates to in English?  Could this be some form of Latin for Anne or Anna?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Helen

I believe the Latin form of Anne would be Anna. I think the priest was writing the Latin for Anastasia which is a given name common in Co. Wexford.
