I'm trying to find out anything I can about my Great Grandmother Catherine Magee. She was born in Leitrim 1844/1845. I have obtained this information from English census records. On her marraige certificate her father is stated as Hugh McGhee (probably spelt incorrectly). Her brother is named on the census as Frank Magee, he was two years older than her. There is also an Ann Magee mentioned on the 1871 census but it does not state any relationship just that she is a lodger. She was recorded as being 42 years of age in 1871.  The only other information i have is from my Ancestry DNA results which state that I have DNA links to North Leinster & East Connacht, Fermanagh and Cavan and North East Leinster and South Ulster. My Great Grandfather was Patrick Macken, I know very litte other than the name on my Grandfathers birth certificate which said he was a furnace man. Catherine was married to a James Macken (From Westmeath) he disappeard of the England Census before my Grandfather was born. There was a family story that Catherine became pregnent by a relative. I know that James Mackens father was Patrick so could this be the same Patrick. My Grandfather apparently went over to Ireland and met his father who gave him some money and told him never to return. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find baptismal records for Catherine and Frank/Francis in Co. Leitrim with father Hugh. I did find the record below for a Bernard Magee in 1848 with a father Hugh. I'm sharing this record as a possible lead. By the way, the Cloonclare RC reords start in 1841.

  • Hi Roger

Thanks for this information, I wonder if the Bernard you mentioned could possibly be my Great Grandmother Catherines brother. Catherine Magee named her son (my Grandfather) Bernard.

If only I had a time machine to go ask all the important questions.

    Cheers

    Helen
