Hi, I'm a granddaughter of the poet Austin Clarke and I am trying to trace his grandfather Denis Clarke who was born in Blessington in Black Ditches (now called Valleymount) near Clarke's Hill, in approx 1830. The family moved to Francis St / Meath St in Dublin sometime before 1868.  Denis married a Mary Anne Smith.

I'd be greatful for any information, I've found a baptisimal record for a Denis Carke in 1828 in the parish of Dunlavin Co. Wicklow but have no idea if this is the correct Denis.

    My family are related in some way to your Denis Clarke. I've found a Denis Clarke baptised in Valleymount RC (Blackditches):

    Denis Clarke, to Matt and Cecilia Clarke [No addresses listed. Mothers' maiden names' were not usually listed at that time in Valleymount]

    It's possible that Cecilia's maiden name was Grandison as the godmother's name is Grandison.
