Hello,

Thank you for offering your help. I found the Roman Catholic church marriage record (through Roots Ireland) for John Lynch and Ellen Doody. (They are the parents of Timothy Lynch, my maternal great-grandfather.)

John Lynch and Ellen Doody were married February 18, 1844 in Cobh, Cork by "E O Sullivan" (priest). Their son Timothy Lynch was baptized Nov. 17, 1844 in Cobh by "T Murphy" (priest). John and Ellen did emigrate from Ireland and come to the U.S. but I don't yet have the year.

Could anyone tell me about Cobh about the year 1844?  I understand that there was a monastery there at the time and that Cobh's big church or cathedral was not yet built. So I presume they went to the monastery.

In those years, was Cobh its own small port town -- not yet part of Cork City?

Or was it more a temporary place to stay before emigrating from the port? I know that it was from Cobh that so many people left in those years.

Ellen Doody was baptized in 1822 in Rathbarry, Castlelyons, Co. Cork by Edmond Maume. Her mother was Honora Walsh and her father Maurice Doody.

Many thanks for your time and help.

Sorcha B. (in Texas, U.S.)
