Hi,

I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. My auntie did quite a bit of work on tracing our Irish roots. Unfortunately, she died 3 years ago and I promised I would keep looking. If anyone can be of help, I would be so grateful.

The furthest back to the most current:

Gregory McGowan m. Margaret McSherry

Their son Patrick McGowen was born in 1810 in Castlemoyle

He married Mary Bridget Loughlin, who was born 1811 in Loch Allen

They had a daughter, Margaret McGowan 11 March 1840 in Leitrim

I was able to connect via DNA to some Loughlins from Loch Allen area. We are related but they do not have records going back that far.

I would be so grateful if anyone can help or point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Ann

  • Hello Ann, Irish records at that remove are church dependent and it is unusual to locate any pre 1800 or indeed pre 1830, most church records are available. You can search the Tithes and Griffiths but you only get heads of house but an address also but you cannot be sure.

Chruch records are here but not searchable except by month and year, not all church records are here either but most. https://registers.nli.ie/

There are two Facebook pages on Leitrim genealogy, South Leitrim gedmatch and Leitrim History and genealogy, same admins if you want to give it a try.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Ann,

My grandfather Francis McSherry was born in Gorteendarrah. Leitrim in 1884. There seem to be many McGowan's in the village of Gorteendarrah.

My grandfather's parents were James McSherry b. 1855 and Catherine McGhee. I wonder if Margaret McSherry was related to my greatgrandfather James? Do you have the year of Gregory McGowan and Margaret's  marriage or any other info about Margaret McSherry?

My grandfather went to Scotland and then came to Boston in 1906. Rooney was another name in the village.

I would love to hear from you. I too want to know more about my grandfather (and grandmother from Gort)!

    Thank you!

    Kind regards,

    Susan McElaney
