I'm looking for information on a Thomas Cox who was born in 1848 and emigrated to California about 1868 or earlier.

He married Mary Rice in California and had a son, Clare - thus my hunch that Thomas may have been from Co. Clare.

Can anyone help?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

One of the main pieces of information that you need when researching your family history in Ireland is a location. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you know much about his emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew which city he arrived at it may be a place to find more information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration information in the US, check the US National Archives at the following link:

You could also try to find his naturalisation papers in the hope that they contain more information. For information on these records follow this link:

I did a search of the surname in the irishtimes surname search engine. This shows you how many households had a certain surname in the mid 19th century. The results show that it was quite a widespread name. To see the results and for some information on the name follow this link:

Do you have any other information on Thomas's family that you could share? Do you know anything about his parents or if he had any siblings? Did they remain in Ireland? The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
