My gggf Luke Dalton, b circa 1810, lived on Coumaraglin Mountain with my gggm Anna (Qualey) Dalton, on a 4-acre plot owned by her father, John Qualey. Luke had a brother, my great-great-great uncle, James Dalton (1809-1849). After James died, Luke put up a headstone for him in the cemetery of the Kilgobnet parish church (St. Abigail's). I have a photo of it.

Until last week, I had never been able to track down who were the parents of Luke and James, though I have tried mightily for years. Last week, I found a Ballylaneen/Stradbally parish baptism record online for a James Dalton, showing a baptism date of August 26, 1809. That is the same year of birth as stated on the gravestone of my ggguncle James Dalton, who is buried only a few miles away from Ballylaneen/Stradbally in the Kilgobnet parish cemetery. The baptism record lists the parents as John Dalton and Mary (Kerwin) Dalton. (Note: The handwriting seems to possibly show "Kerwin" spelled with an "i", but I subsequently have found a number of other records online (Griffiths Valuation, gravestone logs) showing that there were a number of "Kerwan"s living in the Ballylaneen/Stradbally area, but no "Kirwin"s.) Perhaps some Kerwan descendants still live in the area.

There were a number of Daltons over in the nearby Kilgobnet/Colligan parishes, only a few miles away. My DNA testing results and records research have confirmed my Dalton ancestry origins to those specific locations. However, I would like to try to track down more information about a possible Dalton connection to Ballylaneen/Stradbally parish. Only one Dalton is listed there in Griffiths Valuation, a Thomas Dalton. I would like to find more information on John Dalton, husband of Mary (Kerwan) Dalton. The couple would have been born in roughly the 1790 time frame, given the 1809 birth year of James. It's possible her Kerwan family was from Ballylaneen/Stradbally but John Dalton (and his family) was from the nearby Kilgobnet/Colligan area. I am looking for clues that will help me find more about either of them, and perhaps even confirm they were my ggggparents.

  • Hi Bill,

Not sure if you've tried www.rootsireland.ie/ but her are the records from there:

    Date of Baptism:11-Jan-1810Address:
    Parish/District:STRADBALLYGender:
    CountyCo. Waterford
    Denomination:Roman Catholic
    Father:James DaltonMother:Ellen SullivanOccupation:

Only one others from these parents: Patrick 1807

Ohter Daltons from Stradbally parents James & Ellen Conners

    Thomas 1811 John 1813 James 1816 Margaret 1819 Mary 1822 William 1828 Bridget 1830

No luck with the marriage record.

Frustratingly Stradbally is not in the list of parishes for searching for deaths!

The National Library of Ireland has made the R C registers freely accessible online and has baptisms 1806-81 & marriages 1805-40 & 1863-81 https://registers.nli.ie/ which might be worth a shot if you haven't tried there already.

Happy to provide further info from roots if required.

  • Hello Col:

    Thanks so much.

So there was another James Dalton child born in the Ballylaneen/Stradbally area at about the same time. The one you found has a baptism record of 11 Jan 1810 versus the one I found for 26 Aug 1809. Complicates my search a bit more but I really appreciate your bringing this to my attention. I'll go to registers.nli.ie/  as you've suggested and keep digging. Thanks again. If I can ever find a baptism record for my gggf Luke Dalton, with parents' names listed, that could clear up which of these James, if either, was my gggguncle.

    Kind regards,

    Bill
